Our World War: British WW1 mini-series on Netflix

Post by VMI77 »

Three part mini-series by the BBC on Netflix. Each part tells the story of a different unit fighting the Germans in WW1. Just don't see that many depictions of WW1 so I checked it out. Didn't care for some of the cinematography (or for some of the anachronistic music choices) but these were minor irritants and overall it was a surprisingly well done depiction of the war for a TV series. The episodes are supposedly based on recollections of the participants. The first episode deals with the very start of the war for the British and the Battle of Mons and is probably the best. The second episode deals with PALS units later in the war (the Brits let groups of "friends" enlist and stay together in the same unit) and the treatment of deserters. The final episode deals with British tank use in the Battle of Amiens. Tank losses were enormous. The initial number of about 500 tanks was reduced to 6 still operational tanks over four days.

Just watched the first episode. Holy cow. That's all I have to say about that.

Edit: I couldn't help myself. I watched the whole thing. Very well done.

Watched the first episode. Incredible. Glad the runner made it through the war. That battle certainly highlighted the concept of fire superiority. Thanks for the recommendation.

I've been curious about WWII ever since the 5th grade and never paid much attention to WWI outside of school. I've been to Europe a few times and visited a few not so critical WWII sights. I have, however, been to many WWI sites. Most were all in Belgium, but one or two in France. I think WWI was probably more horrific on the whole. I'll check these out.
