You know, I've been looking for an excuse to get back out for some archery... This could be it!jmra wrote:You could use the opportunity to hone your archery skills.

Re: Legal to shoot snakes in yard?
As a follow up, we had a "snake guy" come out and look around my yard and my neighbor's yard. My yard was found to be pretty unfriendly to snakes. Couple little things but nothing major. My neighbor's yard on the other hand didn't look so good. No adult rattler, but plenty of stuff for him to fix if he wants to keep it that way.

Yea, I don't want to know...
Re: Legal to shoot snakes in yard?
I just dealt with this recently.
One of the cats spotted a rattler not far from the house. Thankfully, this cat had the sense to study the situation before letting instinct bite off more then he might be able to chew. I went outside, reconnoitered the situation and found my pellet gun inop. Meanwhile it started pouring rain and the snake disappeared.
I headed for the range, bought some shot shells in .22 and 9 mm to try out. I also found online the ordinance in Comal County which forbids discharging a firearm in a subdivision on a lot of less than 10 acres. It is an affirmative defense if the firearm is discharged for self-defense, predators or varmint control.
Sure enough, a week or so later, we discovered a rattler rattling in the bushes next to the house. I took my Ruger .22 pistol and took care of it. It was small, <3'. Out here in what was recently ranch land, 2+ acre lots, many of them unbuilt, I doubt anyone heard it. Even the deer grazing ~25 yards away didn't even look to see what the noise was. If it had been a large one, the 9 mm would have been better, albeit much louder.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
