Checked luggage is the only kind that you can have a firearm in on a plane. Checked luggage has to be unlocked when the ticketing agent weighs it and takes it from you. Otherwise they cut the locks in the back area when they put them on the conveyor belt.
Every time I have flown with guns post 9/11 (many times) TSA has me lock up the gun case after they x-ray it.
