I avoid DFW. I hadn't been there since 1999, until we went to Rockwall to buy a travel trailer at McClain's RV. I was amazed at how the growth has extended along I-30, all the way to Greenville.
When I used to go to DFW frequently in the late '80s/early '90s, Rockwall was where I would stop to "put on my DFW face" and get ready for the traffic before crossing Ray Hubbard. "Dallas" started when you hit Mesquite. Now, you're in the DFW metro traffic 20 miles east of Rockwall.
In the early '90s, I made regular trips to Dallas while they were undertaking big highway construction in Rockwall, and a smaller project on the west side of Ray Hubbard. They were preparing to expand I-30 from two lanes, to three. Across Ray Hubbard, they had I-30 coned off to one lane for several months, although they didn't seem to be doing any work. I wondered why they weren't working on that section, when they'd had it closed for so long. And then I saw construction vehicles driving in the closed lane, and it hit me: they had it coned off so that they would have their own little private lane between the work in Rockwall, and the work in Mesquite!

I think that was the last time I voluntarily went to Dallas until this year.
Speaking of insane traffic, on 7/4 I took our oldest to DFW to catch a plane back to Fort Irwin. Man, what a rodent orgy that airport has become!
Rockwall does seem like a nice place, though. And if you're in the market for an RV, McClain's has some great deals. Check their green tag specials, which rotate weekly; you'll save thousands off of MSRP.
