A friend of mine is a cop in CA and he used to work in a really bad part of the Bay Area called East Palo Alto. When he was a newer cop, he had an old timer partner that carried an M1 Carbine in the trunk of their patrol car. Sounds like a really nice place to work.WarHawk-AVG wrote:I bet a LEO could get away with a M1 Garand or M1 Carbine faster than he could a M4..they are "less scary" to the anti-gun folks

Re: California shootout
I was on the phone with a colleague near the BofA shootout when it was happening. I could hear the sirens and all the ruckus in the background. A couple of years later, I'm working for a company that happened to be located nearby at the time, and I used to eat in a Subway shop across the street from that bank, and deposit my paychecks in that BofA branch. The walls of the building and the parking lot were still pockmarked all over with bullet holes. My regular parking spot was along the curb right next to where the one BG shot himself in the head.

You can buy drum mags for the Ar platform at any gun show.surprise_i'm_armed wrote: quickly since the BG was ready to rock his M16 at them. The story said
that his M16 was equipped with a 200 round ammo supply. Is that possible?

Do you recall a thread I started a few weeks ago
about the LAPD exhibiting various famous crime
scene evidence in Las Vegas?
I believe they had mannequins dressed in the body
armor of the 2 North Hollywood BG's. I'm guessing the
weapon was on display there as well.
Chances are good that the weapons used in this incident
are the property of LAPD. (I'm guessing).

Re: California shootout
IMHO, it's facinating (and educational) to get the "inside scoop" on incidents like these. I'd really like to know what was going on in these guy's heads. As I asked previously, why in the world would they take a seditive instead of a stimulant or use a Chevy Celebrity as an intented getaway car? The documentry I saw and stuff I've read indicated they had some other items in their arsonal (like a HK "submachine gun"). I mention this because it seems like if they could
afford or steal all that hardware they could have used a fast pickup or suv instead (not that
it would have made a difference as things turned out).
By the way, I like the comedian Ron White's comment in regards to this incident. He said he was watching the footage with his young son "Toot" who said, "Daddy! I can see his head!" (Toot was pretty sure if he were there he could get in a head shot).
AndyC, would you be willing to share were you found that pic?

BTW, one of the two guys, Emil Matasareanu, lived with his mom down the block and around the corner from me. She was a real piece of work... ...one of those folks who gets by by working the system instead of working a job.

Re: California shootout
As far as M1 Garand or M1 Carbine, remember that a Carbine fires a necked down, rimless, .32 Winchester Self-Loading cartridge, which itself was just the smokeless version of the .32-40 blackpowder cartridge. Using a Carbine on those guys would be just about as effective as the 9mms.
OTOH, a few rounds of .30-06 M2 AP Ball, from a Garand, Springfield, or Enfield, might well have truncated the whole "battle."
Especially a well placed head shot.

I think thats all that was needed, be it a .22-to a 40mm.jimlongley wrote:

Re: California shootout
The bay area is a very interesting, unique place. throughout most of the entire metro area, you have between 5-15 miles between mountains and the bay. There is a LOT of demand for space in these tiny strips of land, which is why real estate is so high. There are fewer and fewer places for lower-income people to live, and as time goes on, the price of real estate goes up, and those areas get squeezed even further. East Palo Alto is one of these former low-income areas. Developers over the past 5 years have bought up most of East PAlo Alto and have turned it into more and more upscale living. Like wildlife, though, when you displace a lower income, crime ridden area, those folks have a way of moving into other areas, like displaced wildlife can.
The area I used to live, Fremont, across the bay from East Palo Alto was affected like this, when Hayward, Union City, and San Leandro worked on going upscale. The local police were unable to handle things, and of course, it was impossible to protect yourself in legal ways.
Also, I realize my comparing lower income / crime ridden places to wildlife might seem a bit off color, and I really don't mean anything negative by it, other than being a good way to compare what happens.
This also explains some of the insane liberal policies that the place comes up with, like giving away free money to the poor. (We displaced them, and cant put them anywhere, so lets give them free money so they can hopefully move somewhere and get out of the street!)

Far be it for me to give an educated opinion on this or even question the police actions. I've seen the clip several times and wonder if this was one of the reasons California became so "anti-gun" for civilians?
