So what I am wondering is if any of you guys separate your SD mags from range magazines? ... I don't know, what do you think?

Any thoughts?

My SD mags ARE my range mags. No point in training with something that wouldn't be used in a SD situation.

I essentially do this myself, though I have not marked my magazines yet. The paint marker idea sounds good, so maybe I should pick up a pack of them today.

Generally I think it is a good idea to keep your SD/carry magazines seperate from the range/practice magazines, especially since you have already proofed the SD/carry magazines with the SD/carry ammunition, so you know that those individual magazines function properly with your gun with your SD/carry ammunition. The SD/carry magazines should be function-checked periodically, though, and this can be done whenever you shoot your old carry ammunition before replacing it, or more frequently if you choose. My point is that I would not choose to regularly subject SD/carry magazines to rough treatment, such as dropping them on hard surfaces or ripping them out in simulated double-feed clearances; that is what range/practice magazines are for, among other things.

At the range, the range/practice magazines can be used for casual shooting, live fire drills, IDPA, and dropped on hard surfaces when appropriate, while the SD/carry magazines and ammunition are stowed safely in the range bag.

At home, you can do dry practice manipulations involving the range/practice magazines, while the SD/carry magazines and ammunition are on standby in another room.

I don't buy mags I wouldn't trust for SD. I only buy OEM mags, milspec mags (in the case of AR mags), or MecGar mags (which are OEM for many manufacturers--SIG, Beretta, etc.).

All of mine are factory - so its not a question of low quality to begin with. But when I was testing my gun with my selected SD rounds, I tried them in all three magazines that I owned at the time - to ensure they would feed from all three. Performing that same check with 7 mags seems pricey. Then, with the action required to shoot a match, I would be concerned about repeatedly dropping magazines and then trusting those same mags for SD purposes.

But so far, only one person has agreed with this sentiment, so perhaps I am being too OCD. (It's happened before. )

I usually have around 4 mags at a time for my firearms. When I get close to 10k rounds shot. I start using another 4 mags then I sell the old ones after incorporating the new mags. I have so many mags that it's easier then replacing the springs and cleaning them up

I do separate carry and range mags on my 1911 only. But I NEVER carry my 1911 so it is not an issue. And I usually end up using my Wilson mags for range play anyway. All my other firearms get all the mags used at every trip. If a magazine is identified as a problem then it needs to go away or be repaired. If it is not reliable I have no use for it period.
