New "Disarm 'em" Policy for DPS troopers ???

After reading this post ,I had Lunch with a friend that's a trooper and asked him about this and he "stated that he has not received any memo's on taking gun s from CHL holders on Stops unless he feels a threat " he also stated that there was some Capt. in the D/FW area that told his troopers to Disarm CHL holders and return the weapon unloaded and give the Ammo back first then the weapon . but that stopped when a few complained to Austin.


So I have dealt with local PD's,Sheriff Dept. and State troopers and even a few FBI and BATF&E guys and all have never asked me to remove or give them my weapon.

I seem to misremember but are you retired Peace Officer?

That may actually make a difference in the "Decision" process as to the "Need" to disarm for "Safety".

Since a lot more people are mistakenly shot by LEOs than CHLs maybe they should disarm for our safety.

I have thought about asking the Deputy that stopped my wife to disarm, as he was playing with the thumb break on his holster when he was talking to her.

I asked him if he day a problem wit his hand and the way the gun was held in and he stated that it was a habit that he needed to stop as he has be wrote up for it in the past.


So I think there are some out there that need to stop and think before they ask for a loaded gun to be handed to them.


I will say this, when I made a traffic stop and had a CHL holder tell me his Gun was .... I always asked them to please don't show me it and it was in a safe place at this time.

I was thinking about how many times asked for a CHL holders gun and I think it was only 6 to10 times and I must of made over 800 stops .

I will now stop and go back to reading and see how many have had there weapon removed by a LEO on a contact.

Ahhh, we may be getting warmer to a suspected burro-crat ... Coincidently, the young trooper did hand the 5 rounds back to me first - and we dropped one of them in the exchange. Had to open the pickup door as it had fallen in "the gap", then it rolled out on the ground. He apologized and definitely had to take his eyes off both of us when he bent over to find it in the middle of the night.

There are only four DPS Captains for uniformed personnel in the DFW area - three in Garland - the Driver License Captain, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Captain, the other the Highway Patrol Captain. The Highway Patrol Captain is newly promoted to that position on 9-1-06. I'm not aware of any policy changes he made about CHL holders upon assuming his command. I'll do some research. The fourth uniformed Captain is in Hurst - again Driver License. The CVE Captain and the THP Captain come under the command of the THP Major in Garland. The DL Captains come under the command of the DL Major in Austin.

As I read the law such a blanket policy would clearly be illegal... but every now and then newly promoted people feel a need to show off how tough they are...

Was it the one that gave me my ticket? He did not disarm me nor give any indication that he wanted to. Very polite when he asked me to sign it.
