Sounds good to me. I've never shot IDPA so I'll probably be a little slow. How does a "squad" work in IDPA competition?
It is really simple. In order to make more effecient use of everyone's time, the folks that arrive to shoot are divided up into squads.
At Texas Tactical mathces there are usually 5 +/- stages (scenerios) and between 40-50 shooters. With this arrangement, we divide up into 4 or 5 squads of 8-10 each starting on different stages so that each shooter only has to wait on his squad members to shoot rather than running everyone through each stage one at a time. That could get long and tedious.
In each squad there is a Safety Officer (SO), a scorekeeper, and a shooter involved at any given time. Everyone else is reolading, taping and/or resetting targets and visiting. Everyone's help in taping and resetting the targets is very important to the smooth flow of the match and keeping a few participants from having to do all the work...especially so that the next shooter can prepare for the run.
The SO checks, starts and times the shooter and works to maintain a safe operation during the course of fire. The scorekeeper records times and points down and assists in maintaining safety and looks for proceedural errors.
Everything else is very simple and straighforward and fully explained at the new shooters meeting.
As for slow, that is not a problem. Slow and accurate is a much better starting place that fast and inaccurate. As the old saying goes, you cannot miss fast enough to win...ever.
Most important...Be Safe and Have Fun

I heard back from Matt at the Lone Star Gun Range, and it is a go for the 21st. I'm going to get there at around 9am. I'm going to set the start time at 10am, though anyone is welcome to show up any time before or after then. I'm not yet sure how long we'll be... the last get-together I did was with THR folks, and that lasted pretty much until it started to get dark. At the earliest, I'd say we'll finish at 2pm. At latest, it could be 6pm when the range closes. There's some good barbecue nearby, or we could run back into Austin to eat afterwards.
I'll also be showing up for IDPA shooting on Sunday as well.
Now that we've got firm dates and locations set, can we get responses as to who is going to be there? I'm down for carpooling, as was suggested. I'll be coming from central-north (2222 and Lamar area). I look forward to meeting and shooting with everyone!

Yes. I was just about to post the request, actually.

Just checked with Matt at Lone Star Gun Range - I had the registration fee way off. First-time registration is $5. Daily fee is $12 and a one-year membership is $45. I am posting both days to the event calendar.

I'm still interested in the Sunday IDPA. if the new gear comes I'm going. I apologize now to who ever ends up on my team.
I ordered a Comp-Tac Gurkha (hope I made right choice) and a Wilderness Instructor Belt. I may need to find a better cover garment, but I think I have everything else.
I'm excited .. !!
hello all

it's my first texaschlforum post!
man.. I'm also an idpa newbie, and I'd be very excited to join this, both days. however, I'll be on a road trip and am only 50/50 odds for getting back in time for the jul-22 idpa shoot.
I'm also game to join any carpool forming up.
question on the lone star range. I did a defensive pistol class with KR training a couple months back. in class we had opportunity to do 3/4-speed draw-shoot drills, and a few shoot while moving drills.
I do those drills now with snap-caps, but I'd like to do them with live-ammo every once in a while. do they allow that kind of thing at lone-star?
I work southeast austin, so going there after work would not be too inconvenient.
thanks, and I look forward to meeting all on the 22nd. fingers crossed.
I'll keep my eye on this thread as the day approaches.

Welcome to the forum.
As far as drawing and shooting, I think you're probably OK at the Lone Star range. You can get a definitive answer on the specific drills you are running if you call or e-mail Matt, who I believe is the owner. His contact info can be found at the bottom of this page:

Hopefully I'll see you on the 22nd.

I know we have more Austin folks than this. If you're coming, now is the time to speak up! Knowing how many people we're going to have would be helpful in planning things, especially if we're going to eat afterwards.

I would love to come on the 22, but I would have needed more notice. I work on sundays, and we have the shifts put out a month at a time. I have never done an IDPA match and think that it would be great fun and practice. If there is another time that everyone is going to get together after this I would love to go. Just need about a months notice, so I can turn in my request to be off.

Can you put me down as a maybe?
With the weather this year I'm having a lot of problems getting things done around here, especially getting my hay in.
If the weather stays relatively dry for the next couple of weeks, I may be able to get my hay in, which would free me up to come to your Austin event.
But at this time, not knowing what the weather is going to be, I can't commit...

I'm probably going to have to pass on the Saturday shoot, but if I can make it to this get-together it would be later, maybe in the early afternoon.
I will plan on the IDPA for Sunday. Need a carpool if possible. I'm trying to talk some buddies into going, too.

Hi folks,
I just emailed "Iron Mike" Webb about arranging for a squad for all the Texas CHL Forum folks to shoot together. I don't have a response yet but don't anticipate a problem. I told him maybe 6-8 shooters but left if indefinite. We will probably not be the only shooters on the squad, and that is a good thing. It is good to get to know these good folks.
I drive a pickup so I can take a rider... or two if everyone takes care of personal hygiene

. Plan on being ther about 9:00AM in order to get signed up and attend the new shooters meeting. Match fee is $20...includes range fee. Cash or checks are OK.
Everyone needs to be aware that Mike ususally schedules a shotgun sidematch after the IDPA match. NO extra charge. He sets up a stage with 10-14 steel targets which we run on IDPA rules. BIRDSHOT ONLY. NOT MAGNUMS. If anyone need to blow the cobwebs out of your "shottie", bring it with a box or two of ammo. LIke IDPA you will have movement, use of cover, tactical priority etc. FUN. Adds about an hour +/- depending on number of participants. They try to load everyone to 6 or 7 rounds but if you can only hold 5 don't worry. Also, if you don't have a shotgun but would like to shoot, bring some 12Guage birdshot. There are usually folks who will lend you a shotgun...I will.
Regarding weather, the range is in a creekbed and subject to the whims of weather. I would recommend that you check the Texas Tactical website if there is a hint of bad weather on the day (EARLY) of the match. He will announce cancellations there. Also, if you sign up for his email yahoo group, he will notify everyone that way. THERE IS NO SPAM OR OTHER BAD STUFF FROM BEING ON THIS GROUP.

I'm still counting on doing the IDPA and would love to do the shotgun match. I have a Jeep Cherokee, seats 5 and room for guns and ammo.
