Austin get-together: range shooting 07/21, IDPA 07/22

Post by NcongruNt »

So I've noticed and have been encouraged by the growing ranks of people from the Austin area getting their CHLs and joining up here. It only seems fitting that we should all get together and do some shooting.

I figure with a month or so of notice, we could all find some common time to meet up. Late July or early August seems like a good time.

Anyone interested?

I haven't been able to make the last couple of get-togethers due to prior plans, but I'm definitely up for one.

I'll go ahead and put my vote in for Saturday, July 21.

It might be interesting to meet for an IDPA match. I am sure the Texas Tactical group I shoot with could herd a bunch of us together to make a squad. AggieMM (Ryan), who posts here and updates the reciprocity map, is also one of our Texas Tactical shooters. If we cold gather 5-8 it would make a great squad and we could have a great day. They usually have a shotgun side match after the regular match which is a hoot too.

July 21 is a work day for me but Sunday July 22 would work and there is a match that day. Could anyone make that?

I have never tried the IDPA stuff, but I would be up for a fun type run through it. A little competition for bragging rights can be fun.

I used to shoot with the TT folks - good bunch of people, by the way - before they had a falling-out with Crazy Richard and moved their range further from Austin . . . then I injured my shoulder and was out of it for a couple of years, and they moved their range again . . . the last I heard they were halfway to Houston. Where ARE they shooting these days?
Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

Stephen, I have found the Texas Tactical group to be among the most friendly and hospitable folks around. Their two primary goals for their matches are:
1. Be Safe
2. Have Fun

If you are not doing both, you should consider doing something else.

The matches start sign up at 9A with hammer down at 10A. Between there is a 'new shooters meeting' followed by the regular meeting where basic safety expectations are reviewed

The new shooters meeting, is a welcome, a summary of what to expect and how the match is run, rules, scoring, safety and range commands. Lasts about 10 minutes max.

The IDPA match consists of a number stages or scenarios ( usually 5 or 6 with this group) where the shooter is presented with a problem to solve as a law abiding concealed carry citizen. For example you approach an ATM at night and your are accosted by armed theives intent on taking your cash. Or you may be in a convenience store late at night and some robbers enter threatening everyone. Each stage will require no more than 18 rounds (you can use more if needed) and may have 3-9 targets, some may be moving, some may be behind hostages (no-threat targets), some may be protected by hard cover...or some combination of these...and you will be moving as you encounter the threats. Before each stage, written instructions are read and a physical walk-through is given each squad and questions answered.

Equipment requirements are minimal.
1. handgun with a minimum .38 Special or 9mm
2. a simple belt type holster at the waist. No shoulder, crossdraw, small of back, thigh rigs. Just a regular verticle or FBI cant holster.
3. a total of 3 magazines for semi-auto or three speed-loaders for revolver
4. a concealment garment, which can be a vest, untucked sport shirt, hawaiian shirt, long T-shirt, etc.
5. eye and ear protection
6. ammo 100-150 rounds
7. $20 total match fee which includes range fee.

The regular match runs till about 1-1:30P and the shotgun side match adds about an hour depending on the number of participants.

There are some National Class shooters there, beginners and a wide range in between. Last week we had 45 shooters, ranging in age from about 10 to the 70's. We had 5 new LEO shooters participate. LEO's can use duty gear in lieu of concealment garments. We have computer folks, welders, Amzoil salesmen, pharmacists, Volvo mechanics, LEO's, Austin FD battalion chief, students, current and ex military......... you get the drift. We have some women but need and want more to participate. My daughter(age 21) shoots with us when A&M, work and social calender permit. She started with us at age 17 and now an older sister wants to start.

I really look forward to it and find it a great source of stress relief. Some times after too long between matches even my wife comments that I "need to go shoot something".

The range is Cedar Ridge Range about 13 miles west of New Braunfels toward Bulverde. The Texas Tactical website has directions and lots of other info.

For more info go to:

and

If anyone cannot make it with this get together but would like to give it a try, just let me or AggieMM know and we would be glad to get you started and be on a squad with you at a mutually convenient time.

I'm for the 21st/22nd. Since I know a lot of people won't be able to make a Sunday morning match due to other commitments, perhaps we could do both. I was thinking of going to Lone Star Gun Range in Lockhart on Saturday and then a late lunch or something afterwards. This is a new range that allows movement and drawing from holster, so it would be a good place for us to shoot and give each other tips. Last I went, they only had a pistol range, but they were working on the rifle range and have said that it is supposed to be done before summer is out.

I would be up for one or both of the get-togethers. We've tried Austin area get togethers in the past few months and have yielded only 2 to 5 participants. this may be a chance to get more to participate.
I'd hope that there would be some options to carpool since it is a ways to travel on a Sat/Sun morning.
I haven't been to the current TT range but I've been to the previous one a couple times.
I believe there is safety in numbers..
numbers like: 9, .22, .38, .357, .45, .223, 5.56, 7.62, 6.5, .30-06...

Let's see, weekend after the 4th is in a gun free zone (CA), the weekend after that is in another (NJ), and next one is in Colorado with Boy Scouts. Looks like August is going to be the time to get a fix for my addiction  With my schedule I've managed to miss each get together since Eagle Peak but I have new toys now...

I might be in for some IDPA if you all don't mind a newby tagging along.

I'd have to get me a holster before then. Can I use a blade tech Offset Drop holster? I'll go ahead and order one if I can use it. I wonder if I can actually get it by then. Comp-tac might be easier to get.

The lone star range sounds like fun too. I can probably make either one.

thanx,
Rick

Hi Rick!

All of us either are or were newbies at one time. You would be most welcome...anytime, not just for this proposed event.

A drop/offset holster is only legal in IDPA for women. That is because of their unique body structure. Many conventional belt holsters are very akward for them, that is the reason for the exception.

A Comp-Tac IWB or OWB will work nicely. You will be very pleased with there product quality and excellent customer service...fast too. I use a Comp-Tac ShirtTucker my self with my Glock 30.

Howdy!

Okidokie, Comp-Tac it is then. I'll order something for my PX4 later today or tomorrow.

I've wanted to give this a try for awhile, so I'll definitely come and check it out no matter what is decided for the get together.

I appreciate the invite,
Rick

So it looks like there's some positive response for shooting at Lone Star Gun Range on July 21st and meeting up at the Texas Tactical match on the 22nd. I'm going to try and schedule myself for both. I've e-mailed the range owner at Lone Star to make sure we'll be good to shoot on the 21st. I'll make sure to check with them to see if the rifle range is going to be available by the 21st or not. If you've never been to the range, there's a $15 (i think that's the price I remember) one-time registration fee. The daily range fee is $12. You can get a 1-year membership for $45, though it's supposed to change to $75 once the rifle range is built.

Anyone have a preference for a start time? The range opens up at 9am. I am also interested in grabbing some lunch afterwards, so we can eat somewhere out there or come back into town. Any suggestions?

I have to work till about 1 PM-ish on Saturday 7-21 so I would be unable to participate in any activities on that AM.

I WILL be at the Texas Tactical match on Sunday 7-22. If there seems to be enough interest, I would be happy to get with Mike Webb and let him know that we would like to be on the same squad. Depending on the number of folks from this forum, we might make up the whole squad, assuming we have enough SO's and scorekeepers. If there are only a few of us, we can still be squadded together and just complete the squad with the regular Texas Tactical participants. That would not be a bad thing. They are good folks.

Think about it and let me know a few days out so I will be able to get with Mike. If we don't get rained out this Saturday, I'll see him at their Carbine match this Saturday.

Sounds good to me. I've never shot IDPA so I'll probably be a little slow. How does a "squad" work in IDPA competition?
