Please - no offense intended

Post by couzin »

I am in agreement with stevie_d_64 - no offense was intended. And while I recognize any email or post to the internet becomes pretty much viewable by anyone. Our sharing of PMs was just because the discussion has been about people very close to us and we wouldn't want to hurt them any more than they have already been (no matter how deserving they might be for screwing up so badly).

In my case, my issue was with a family member who has drawn probation, can't seem to figure out at 40 he/she needs to stay away from certain things that create trouble or can get you arrested, and may need to boomerang back to my home. I don't forgive this person and I am really POed and disgusted about it, but, family still has to support other family (to a point - I fully understand that). I have guns, I have a CHL, I am a reasonable person, but I really don't want to: a) send this person to jail because they had easy access to my weapons; b) create a situation where something bad will happen in my own home; or 3) make me just create distance from this person by telling them that they are on their own. I also don't want to have to take my weapons someplace to store them if this person is visiting, nor do I want to have to worry about my own carry weapon if in his current home, or mine.

I believe I have collected some good information in the PMs with others - but again, because some of the discussion is personal - I think it should remain private. This is about as far as I want to reveal here.

I think the biggest problem is that there really is not a clear direction for us (as gun owners, CHL holders, or even as parents/family members) on what to do for or around these people. It seems vague, and may be subject to who or what State or Federal agency wants to make a case out of it. Meanwhile, the potential to cause someone to go back to jail for the remainder of their sentence, the possibility of my having weapons confiscated or having to move them somewhere else, or potentially being prosecuted for something, really worries me.

In continuation...

In hindsight, and what I am really trying to say, is this. I no longer trust this person, I am afraid that the proximity to weapons may be a really big temptation, and given a potential psycho-depressive mindset, may be a danger to themselves, us, or others. I just will not let that happen...

To sum it all up without dealing with details of specific situations...

Even if you are licensed or not, it is my understanding from what I was told that you are ok to maintain posession of a firearm in the presense of a convicted felon, even one on parole, if you maintain positive control over that firearm...That any other firearms (not under your direct control) that you may posess, are locked up, or rendered un-usable...

We all know you are in your right to have a firearm on your hip, on your property or business, concealed or not, with or without a licence...

In public of course, we must adhier to the rules laid out in the law...

The presense of a known felon, on parole or not, is not a hit against you...You have not committed a crime...Of couse putting the thing down and leaving the room with someone of that status would be a problem, if a Parole Officer were to pay you a visit...But figure the odds...

I know everyone here will use common sense in thier personal situations, and apply this information as they see fit...

There's really not much more to this than what you can apply to what I have been told and stated here...

If a Parole Officer is a real ball-buster, you may want to seek legal advise on how to proceed...
