'Bullied' Home Schooler Arrested After Cops Find Weapons Cache in Pennsylvania
Image
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. — A home-schooled teenager who amassed a cache of weapons, including a hand grenade, and tried to recruit another boy for a possible school attack in Pennsylvania was charged with solicitation to commit terror, authorities said Thursday.

The 14-year-old, who authorities said had felt bullied, was taken into custody after police raided his home in the Philadelphia suburbs on Wednesday evening. He had talked about mounting an attack on Plymouth Whitemarsh High School similar to the 1999 massacre at Colorado's Columbine High School, authorities said. In that incident, two disgruntled teens killed 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves.

"I do not think an attack was imminent and I am not certain that an attack was going to occur at all," District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. said at a news conference. "It could have simply been big talking by a kid who thought that he was bullied previously and he was going to exact his revenge."

The teen was charged as a juvenile with solicitation to commit terror and other counts and was being held at a youth facility. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

The arrest came the same day that another teenager shot and wounded four people at an alternative high school in Cleveland, Ohio, before killing himself. Students at SuccessTech said Thursday their warnings that the 14-year-old boy was planning such an assault went unheeded by the school's principal.

Castor declined to name the suspect's parents and said he did not think they had retained lawyers.

"They are now under investigation by us, concerning whether there's any complicity in putting the weapon in this boy's hands," Castor said.

The weapons found included a 9 mm assault rifle that the teenager's mother had recently bought for him, Castor said. Police also found about 30 air-powered guns, plus swords, knives, hand grenades, a bomb-making book, videos of the 1999 Columbine attack in Colorado and violence-filled notebooks. The weapons were plainly visible in the boy's bedroom, Castor said.

They found no ammunition for the most dangerous weapon, the assault rifle.

Plymouth Township police say they received permission from the boy's parents to search their home after getting a tip Wednesday from a high school student and his father.

Authorities also found one working hand grenade and three others that were still being assembled.

Classes were held as usual Thursday at the Pennsylvania high school.
This will be an interesting case to watch. This story has all the buzz words you'd expect to find in a story about more than one gun. The photo-op with all the confiscated guns, 97% of which might only put an eye out, says a lot about how this 14-year-old is going to be treated. I think Fox New's motto, "We Report, You Decide" is going to need to be changed to "We've Already Done the Thinking For You".

I'd like to know what was meant by "one working hand grenade and three others that were still being assembled". The describer's motive may be in question, especially if that same person believes a BB-gun to be part of a WEAPONS CACHE!.

On the other hand...if he was planning an attack at a school, or just tried to recruit help, showing intent, he should go down for it.

At least they followed up on the "warnings" given to them

What 9MM assault rifle? The media sure is beating this assault rifle drum really hard!

Based on the picture... and the description "air-powered guns", what do you bet those are airsoft rifles?

P.S. The "assault rifle" is a 9MM Hi-Point Carbine...designed during the Clintoons AWB, specifically to NOT have any of the "eeeevil black rifle" designations, all the other guns are TOYS!!!

10round magazine
No pistol grip
No bayonette lug
No select fire

The media sure is going out of its way to blow this out of proportion!

You can guarantee some new "anti-gun" laws being thrown around in rapid succession

I've been wanting a few of those 9mm "assault rifles" myself...of course, it's gotta be "evil black" to be extra threatening ;-)

As a matter of fact, I can't think of a more effective "battle weapon" than a 9mm "assault rifle," that's what the guys in Delta SEAL Sigma Theta Force Ten from Navarone  use when they roll out on evil-doers!

Bah! The story is not getting any clearer yet:
Fox News wrote:Police, who searched home with the permission of the teen's parents, also discovered seven explosive devices Castor has described as homemade grenades: plastic containers filled with BBs to which gunpowder could be added. Authorities said one grenade was operable and the others had been in the process of being assembled.
What does operable mean? Filled with gunpowder? Why don't they say "one grenade was filled with gunpowder and BBs and ready to be used"? These kind of details are very important to know.

The mother is also being charged:
Fox News wrote:His mother was charged with unlawful transfer of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a minor, corruption of a minor, endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of reckless endangerment.

A hand grenade without a fuse or detonation mechanism is still just a storage can for gunpowder. I've never seen a dummy grenade come with a fuse. Perhaps the reporter was misled by the police/DA who obviously went to great lengths gathering and presenting the "arsenal". I'm sure they were simply attempting to be complete in providing the "facts". They simply forgot a couple of little details.

Mom Charged With Buying Pa. Teen Weapons

http://www.comcast.net/news/index.jsp?c ... 86410.html

By MARYCLAIRE DALE, Associated Press Writer
2 hours ago

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - The mother of a 14-year-old who authorities say had a cache of guns, knives and explosive devices in his bedroom for a possible school attack was charged Friday with buying her son three weapons.

Michele Cossey bought her home-schooled son a .22-caliber handgun, a .22-caliber rifle and a 9 mm semiautomatic rifle, authorities said. The teenager felt bullied and tried to recruit another boy for the possible attack at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, authorities said.

Acting on a tip from a high school student and his father, police on Wednesday found the rifle, about 30 air-powered guns, swords, knives, a bomb-making book, videos of the 1999 Columbine attack in Colorado and violence-filled notebooks in the boy's bedroom, Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. said.

Cossey, 46, of Plymouth Meeting, bought the rifle, which had a laser scope, at a gun show on Sept. 23 and provided police with a receipt, investigators said in court papers. The teenager said the two .22-caliber weapons were stored at a friend's house.

The teen was ordered Friday to remain in juvenile detention.

His mother was charged with unlawful transfer of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a minor, corruption of a minor, endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Castor has said he does not believe and attack was imminent or would occur at all. He said Friday that the teen had a "disturbed mind."

"This was a smart kid that clearly believes he was picked on and was a victim," Castor said. "He had psychological issues and began to act out on those feelings."

Police, who searched home with the permission of the teen's parents, also discovered seven explosive devices Castor has described as homemade grenades: plastic containers filled with pellets to which gunpowder could be added. Authorities said one grenade was operable and the others had been in the process of being assembled.

The search did not turn up any ammunition for the most dangerous firearm in the bunch, the assault rifle.

The teen previously attended middle school in the district but had been taught at home for more than a year after voluntarily leaving school, Castor said.

The arrest came the same day a 14-year-old in Ohio opened fire at his Cleveland high school, wounding four before killing himself.

I just checked the PA state hunting regs. You can get a hunting license in PA at age 12!! Why is everbody(well the media) freaking out about this 14 yr. old having a .22 pistol, rifle and a 9mm carbine?. And charging his mother for firearms violations.

If they had seen my bedroom when I was 14, people now days would be upset for sure!! That was before the Gun Control Act of 1968. We didn't need no "stinkin paper work". I bought my .303 SMLE in Quebec Canada for less than $20 USD, it was brand new in cosmoline, while we were on a fishing trip. Brought back across the boarder, no problem. They were only concerned about the number of fish we had.

Well anyway the liberals can now "whackout" about Guns AND Home schooling all at the same time.

The kid probably needs a good beating or psychiatric help or both.

My Boy Scout patrol, all 6 or 8 of us could have taken out a small town. We never tried to. What has changed in 40 years? Yes, that is the question!

The real fuel for this fire is his stated intent, and the fact he was trying to build a hand grenade. Just because he didn’t know what he was doing doesn't mean he would not have learned.

One thing that I find interesting is how this group as whole complains that bad people need to be pursued, instead of gun owners. Here is an example of "Them" actually preempted such a person and this group is complaining.

and YES a BB gun is not a firearm, but let some one start bouncing BB off your fore head and I'll bet they want seem so harmless. The hand grenade outstanding of course.

I'm not complaining about the authorities being preemptive. I'm complaining about them staging a photo-op of an "arsenal" of which 97% of the guns are BB guns. Not until 3/4 into the story do you get an explanation that only one gun in that picture could kill a person. They can be preemptive, but don't start misleading folks to help build your case. [edit - that was directed at the authorities, not you mcub]. There are laws on the books for just making the threats that kid is supposed to have made.

Oh by the way...the some "novelty" airsoft ammo containers look like little pineapple grenades..I wonder if that is what they are referring to as the grenades
