with so many guns on the market it has been tuff to narrow it down but i am down to 2 brands. .....glock and xd. how do the 2 compare? i know glock has a tenifer coating. but does the coating on the xd compare? i have a sigma 40ve now but have had some problems with it. so need something more reliable. any comments or opinions would be apreciated. thanks in advance. rob

I think you can't go wrong with either one. I have a Glock and love it. From what I've heard, both are reliable and would serve you well. However, having shot both, I really liked the feel of one over the other... so I think you're gonna need to shoot them both to decide which one fits you best.

If you can shoot them both that will help you decide. I was dead set on getting a Glock based on friends opinions. But after shooting the Glock and the XD I determined the XD fit better in my hand and I shot it better.

Not only do I consider the XD to be a superior weapon, but I also consider it to be safer. And, on top of it all, the Melonite is much better, too. When I had my XD engraved, the master engraver from Beretta had to do it on the grip instead of the slide as it he could not get his tools to penetrate the finish. These are just thoughts...

So are these...

i have shot both. i shot a glock 17 and really liked it and then i shot a xd 40 hit every one in the x spot! did well with the xd but my concern many is the size of the xd and the coating issues. will the coating of the xd stand up to daily carry?

The "coating issues" you're referring to had to do with the pre-2006 models. The problem has since been fixed and SA has switched to a 100% Melonite finish. I carry mine every day. EVERY day, and I do so with a polo or t-shirt covering the gun in my IWB holster. The gun sits against my skin for approximately 8-12 hours per day.

"Pre-2006 versions of the XD were protected with a metal treatment called Bruniral. Some who own pistols with the Bruniral treatment have reported significant rust problems - especially those who carry the XD against their skin. Fortunately, current versions of the XD are being manufactured the Melonite brand of Carbonitriding, which has solved all problems for daily gun carriers."

"The XD series has only been on the market for a few years, so shooters are unable to judge its long-term track record, but the line has already established a reputation for bombproof reliability. One so-called 'Torture Test' was conducted in which an XD-9 was run over with a truck, frozen in a block of ice, caked with sand, and even stripped and degreased, firing nearly 20,000 rounds without a single malfunction in the process."

I have had an XD9 SC for over a year and have carried it IWB for at least half that time. The finish looks new still. I don't think either will have a problem for years of carry. That said, how a gun looks means little to me. As long as it doesn't rust I have no problem. I know Glocks are proven to resist wear if that is the most important thing. As for comfort and accuracy, XD hands down. That is especially true in .45 cal. . If XD made a true compact or sub-compact .45 I would sell my Glock 30 and never look back. That is my opinion.

I routinely carry an XD45 for six or more hours daily. I also practice/train a lot, so my pistol goes in and out of the holster frequently. Finish still looks new and shows no sign whatsoever of any wear.

As for Glock vs XD, you just have to go with what you like. Both are excellent weapons, so it's a matter of what fits you. Personally, I never could get used to the grip angle on the Glock, whereas the XD just feels "right" in my hand.

I have both in a 45 and like them both equally. It's one of those try it to see what works best for you.

If you are in the DFW area and interested in a 45, PM me and I will let you try mine.

I've shot both and much preferred my Glock 21. However my friend shot them both with me and he prefers the XD. It will be a personal preference.
