Some Want The Right To Carry Guns On Campus

(CBS 11 News) DALLAS A nationwide effort is underway to give college students the right to carry concealed guns on campus. Those who support the idea are being asked to wear empty gun holsters around their waist.
"At Virginia Tech, if someone would have stopped that student from going into those classrooms, or from shooting the very first kid, we could have stopped a lot of murders," said Michele Connole.
Connole is a recent University of North Texas graduate who is still active with her alma mater. In 2004, she was pushing for the rights of students to carry concealed weapons. She had little sympathy back then, but today support is growing.
"As we saw with Virginia Tech, laws that prohibit people from carrying weapons on campus didn't really stop the shooter," said Shawn Griffiths, a member of the UNT Young Conservatives of Texas.
This week on college campuses across the nation, a group called Students For Concealed Carry On Campus is lobbying universities to allow guns on campus.
"If they carry a whole bunch more guns legally, then it will make it easier to bring them on campus, which means even more shootings could occur," said UNT freshman Amy Stephens.
At Southern Methodist University, the idea is also getting mixed reaction.
"Guns on campus are a horrible idea, especially with recent shootings at schools and other catastrophic events," said SMU fresman Dexter Hosteder.
Other students are on the fence. They see the value of defending yourself, but are concerned about the cost.
"Just because a weapon will make you feel a little safer, there's still the potential for danger and accidents," said SMU junior Chris Gott.

My wife works at UNT and I told her to keep an eye out for that student and straighten her out
All of these new articles and polls that have been out recently need to begin specifying concealed carry for "Licensed Holders". I don't believe that just any person should carry on campus, but someone with a CHL should have the ability to.

Yep; I don't see how it will make it easier to carry on campus, since I've carried on at least two campuses this year. Nothing but my preference for obeying the law (and the fact that there's usually at least one LEO around...not because they might catch me, but because if anything happens, after some of them faint, I know where to get guns quicklyWillieD wrote:My wife works at UNT and I told her to keep an eye out for that student and straighten her out![]()

University Professors Afraid of Firearms
I'm a university professor who is not afraid of firearms. I wish I could say the same thing about some of the folks I've seen behind the slides or cylinders.
