Austin get-together - 12/8 Shooting at Noon, Dinner at 6:30

Post by NcongruNt »

[EDIT - 11/28/2007 I have set the date for 12/8/2007. We will be meeting at Lone Star Gun Range at noon (I will be there at 10:00am, you are welcome to come early). We will be meeting for dinner at Green Mesquite on Barton Springs Road in Austin.]

It seems like there are more and more Austin folks joining up, an an appropriate time for all of us to get together. The weather has gotten quite nice for shooting, or we could all get together for lunch, or both. Any other suggestions are certainly welcome as well.

Here are my suggestions:

Shooting at Lone Star Gun Range in Lockhart. It is relatively near town, and the only range I'm aware of anywhere near Austin that allows moving and shooting.

Lunch at Green Mesquite on Barton Springs. The barbecue is great, and there's a large outdoor area that can easily accommodate groups.

I'm thinking 11/17, 12/1, or 12/8.

If you're interested or have suggestions, please post below.

The place you are reffering to is also know as CTXPTA, or the Central Texas Protection and Training Academy. Great range; Still young, but spend some time out there and you'll find that Matt is proud of the place and making upgrades and improvements every day.

As for an Austin get-together, I would be game. I've never really done one of those... Do we all wear nametags that show our handles or screen names?

Yup, been out there several times and have a membership.

We can do name tags if we want, depending on how many people go.

If ya'll have it at the BBQ place and time accomodates my wife and I will drive down. Our daughter and (only) grandson live on Austin's north side.

I'm in. Lockhart sounds good since it is closer to me than Austin is.

Good deal, Looks like this one is shaping up much better than the last, where we were contending with the constant rain and other summer plans.

We need to figure out which date is going to be best for everyone. I should be good for any of the dates mentioned above.

what was wrong with the last? ... oh yeah, it was just you and me.

still, we got to shoot some steel, practice some on-the-move drills. good times.

2 trips ago to lonestar, Matt had a cool steel course set up on the left-side bay. unfortunately, it was all taken down on my last trip. I'll call and see what the story there is.

shooting then BBQ... good combo.

on 11/17 the texas tactical crew has their IDPA match. I'll probably be there.

for me the early afternoon of 11/10, or even 11/3 would work.

If I can make a suggestion... Rather than 15 or 20 posts talking about dates, I would add the dates you suggested to a poll and let everyone vote.

Well, I want to put it at least 2 weeks in the future to give everyone a chance to make plans and arrange their schedule. I'm open to earlier dates if we have enough people commit. I just want to give enough notice so that we can include as many people as possible. Once I get enough responses, I'll put up a poll of prospective dates.

I agree that shooting then BBQ for dinner is probably the best way to go. That way, we can give people who can shoot but not do dinner, and vise-versa the opportunity to attend and meet others on the forum.

Another thought... 11/10 and 11/17 are the last two weekends of college football season, so it may be tough to drag people out on those Saturdays. The following Thursday is Thanksgiving, which means many will be out of town through the weekend. I'd say early December in that lull (at least for the non-intense shoppers) between the holidays.

Those are good things to take into consideration. That narrows it to 12/1 or 12/8. I'd say 12/15, but I'd be afraid that it would be too close to people's holiday preparations for most people to attend. I'm leaning towards 12/1 myself. I'll go ahead and post a poll for those two dates and see what that gives us.

Here's the plan so far:

Shooting at Lone Star Gun Range in Lockhart at noon. I'm going to show up considerably earlier (probably about 10:00), and anyone who wants to show up early is welcome to do so. I'll plan shooting time to go until about 5:30 or so. I'll contact Matt and make sure the range is going to be available that day. Rifle places are supposed to be available by then as well, so we should be able to bring our long guns.

Dinner starting between 6:30 and 7:00 at Green Mesquite on Barton Springs Road in Austin. I'll call ahead the day of to make sure they have adequate space set up outside for us.

I had voted for either but then just realized I have a work event on the 1st. I'd like to do dinner and shooting but I'm not taking the class until Nov 11th so I doubt I'll have my plastic by then :) I guess I could just leave my gun in the car while eating though, right?

Also just realized that's the range I'll be going to for my qualification test. Reading over the website it seems you have to register to shoot there and you can only do that Mon- Thurs? Anyone know the details about that? I guess I can just register when I go out there for my test but wanted to give everyone else a potential heads up
