Carry gun hunting?

Post by KD5NRH »

Anybody here actually hunt with their carry weapon? (Not just carry it while hunting, but actually set out to take game with it, I mean.) I wasn't trying to yesterday, but I came pretty close to taking a deer with the 2" 605; she spooked when I was about 25yds away. Of course, she was 60+yds out and still moving fast by the time I cleared leather. If I'd been paying attention instead of playing with settings on the new digital camera, I'd have at least gotten some good photos, and given that gun's previous performance at that range, some meat too.

OTOH, when she spooked, I started bringing the camera up left-handed while going for the gun right-handed, so I guess I'm learning the importance of documentation.

Took a 8 point buck with a 4 5/8 barrel 45 colt peacemaker....

Was using latrine (and smoking a cig) when he just walked right through camp straight up to me.....
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.

I was reading Stephen A. Camp's website a couple of weeks ago, and he has several stories about hunting hogs with his Hi-Powers. Incidentally, 9mm and .45 seem to be about equally effective in taking down the animals, according to his experience. He refers to these hunts from time to time in his articles about caliber comparisons.

Nope, security. I know my company's not going to back me up if a situation comes up that they can somehow weasel out of, so I plan around being my own best witness.
