Be careful about how you portray yourself online.

Edit: Blarg, "profile" was left out of the end of the copy & paste headline

The less you say about yourself online the better.

Companies faced with a federal machine which can shut them down for declining a request to "cooperate", can't be blamed for cooperating. Okay, they can be blamed, and they shouldn't cooperate. But the coercion would be overwhelming.

"Apparently Hushmail has been providing information to law enforcement behind the backs of their clients. Billed as secure email because of their use of PGP, Hushmail has been turning over private keys of users to the authorities on request. 'DEA agents received three CDs which contained decrypted emails for the targets of the investigation that had been decrypted as part of a mutual legal assistance treaty between the United States and Canada. The news will be embarrassing to the company, which has made much of its ability to ensure that emails are not read by the authorities, including the FBI's Carnivore email monitoring software.'"

Nothing on the internet is "private". If you put it out there, sooner or later it will be seen.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

In the Air Force a lot of people have gotten themselves into trouble over the pictures they put up on myspace/facebook. Most of these people were pretty dumb, IE they posted pictures of themselves standing in a restricted area (no cameras allowed), or doing something stupid with airforce issued gear, also a few people even had pictures of them doing drugs. We even had a guy once who stole a bunch of old flak vests and kevlars that had been in storage and had pics of him wearing them on his myspace.
