Renewal Question

Post by Originalist »

So here I am coming up on my first renewal (Aug 08). I know DPS will send me a renewal packet/notice of renewal and I have to take the class, but...

Do I have to wait to get the packet before I can take the class or can I take thet class sometime between now and then, accomplish all the paperwork and just have it standing by waiting for the notification?

Thanks in advance for the replies

AFCop - I think you have to take the class sometime within 6 months before your license expires. If I am wrong someone here will let us know.

DPS will send you a renewal notice approximately 6 months before your CHL expires. You can apply for renewal at the DPS website, or send in a request for a renewal packet. You can take your renewal course up to six months before you send in your renewal application. You can take the course before your packet arrives, but you'll have to get the FBI fingerprint card and affidavits from your instructor, if you want to have prints and notary work done during your class.

Here is the link to the code, in the current handbook.
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/ ... df#page=20

DPS wants you to use a 4 month window of time. It starts 6 months before due date, and they want the application sent in 60 days before the due date of your license. (That is because under law they have their own 60 day window to get their task done.)

You will pay no fee as active military.

If you want to fill out your forms online:

(caution this link will have outdated advice under the FAQs, if you read them.)

Thank you for your service.
