Moving to Oklahoma

Post by grandpatim »

My wife and I decided to start driving a truck for a living. The only thing is to get hired we have to change our residency to Oklahoma. We are just going to get an address through a UPS store just to establish residency. And we will have to get Oklahoma drivers licenses. But we are going to actually still live here in Texas. Will I still be able to keep my Texas CHL or will I have to surrender it and get an Olahoma CHL? If I do have to change it to Oklahoma does anyone know what is involved?

Thanks,
Tim

Any resident of any state who meets the other eligibility requirements can have a Texas CHL.

Texas State ID Card

Post by texasag93 »

If you have to change your DL to OK, just get a Texas State ID card.

I lived in Ohio but had a Texas DL (temporary residence in Ohio, kept home in Texas).

I had to get an Ohio ID to get an Ohio CHL.

This was covered in the CHL Instructor renewal class I attended last week. All you have to do is send in an address change and a new CHL will be mailed to you. Obviously, it will go to your new address in Oklahoma. BTW, DPS no longer issues Texas ID's to non-residents.

I have a concern that is unrelated to your CHL. If you truly "live" in Texas, I'm not sure you can drive on an Oklahoma driver's license for extended periods of time. I'm hardly an expert on this, but you may want to check it out.

Yeah, with this "Real ID" stuff, they're cracking down on people who use mailboxes as residence addresses.

I don't know all the details.

We are going to get us an apartment after we get done with training. We don't want to pay rent on a second place to live in case we don't make it through training. We are keeping our residence here in Texas for our daughters to live in while they are in college. After we do the year we have to work to pay back the schooling we are going to move back and go to work for someone local. My only concern was would I lose my Texas CHL and have to do it over when we move back. I have checked into the UPS store address and its okay to do as a temporary measure as they only allow you to do it for 3 months. And the company has no problem with it.

School/Education

Post by texasag93 »

You are going to OK for school.

How many students that you know go to another state for their education and change their driver's license to that state. You are different with it being a driving school, but I do not see you having to forfiet your residency.

Also, if you are paying taxes on a home that is your permanent residence, I think that you can still call it your residence. Most younger students do not do that, but their parents do.

I think Cheney still has a wyoming DL. How many days a year does he "live" there.

It may be worth a call to the CHL group in Austin or just go to your local DPS ID office and talk to an officer.

IANAL.

We sold our house a couple of years ago just to do this. We are renting it from the person who bought it from us. We didn't figure our daughters would still be at home when we made the move.
