.50 cal 1911

Anyone ever heard of these guys? They offer 1911's in .50 cal and .45 ACP...but they cost almost $3000. I'm not endorcing them or anything, just trying to find out if anyone knows anything about em'.

Having seen .50 desert eagles pop out of hands when firing, I imagine this is a painful gun to shoot.

Well, its not a .50 AE rounds its just a tiny bit bigger than the .45. They call it the .50 GI, but from reading on the page the projectile is the same as a .50 ae/.500 s&w but the casing is close to a .45.

They have been around for awhile, and seem to be pretty decent.

All the "frame" parts are of basic 1911 specs. (model 1), but the slide, barrel, and few other parts are proprietary IIRC.

I'd love to have one, but have other more important things going on right now.

The 50 Guncrafter Industry (GI) is a 50 with case rim the size of a .45ACP. The brass are proprietary from GI, and you can purchase the brass from GI if you so choose to handload.

It is an awesome pistola, and at $3000+ it is at the custom 1911 price range. They are hand fitted by a in house pistol smith which explains part of the price tag. They also sell a .45ACP conversion for the 50GI if you need to practice on some less expensive ammo.

I was at John Farnam's course in Victoria in October, and one of the guys showed up with a .50 GI to use in the class. We brought a minimum of 1,000 rounds for the two, 12-hour days, and I admit I was as much awed by the thought of the cost of the content of his ammo box as I was the nifty 1911.

The bullet is about 300 grains, I believe, but the pressures are about the same as .45 ACP. Recoil--at least on that full-size frame--wasn't much different than a .45 ACP. I don't know what the accuracy of the round is at longer distances, but he shot it quite well out to the 25-yard max we worked at that weekend. I'll note, also, that he didn't have a single FTF or FTE that I saw...admittedly he was down the line from me on group shoots, but I saw him on all of the team contests and time trials.

He also shot the second-fastest qualification time...which impressed me because he was at a disadvantage: all rounds were on steel spinners, and we could only shoot the top section, meaning that the more that top section rocked when you hit it, the smaller the target was for the next shot because it had tilted away from you, and the more precise your timing had to be compared to the 9mm shooters whose individual shots didn't move the plate as much.

I won't be runnin' out to buy one, but if someone wants to give me one for Christmas, I'd sure be happy about it.

Thats one of the neat things about it. For another 300 some odd dollars you can have them hand fit a .45 acp conversion for it (if ordered at the same time).

You then have a nice custom .45 acp and .50 GI in the same package.

In fact, I don't see any reason why one of the aftermarket .22 conversions couldn't be used as well.

I spent 1600.00 on a LAR Grizzly in 44 mag and the mark 5 is a 50 AE,I guess if ya got 3000.00 fer a unique firearm go for it but i thought the 1600 grizzly was gonna cost me a fortune in honeydos

I would not touch it.......

Mainly because ammunition is not readily available from multiple sources.
