Mayor pro tem Samuel fights off attackers
By: BETH GALLASPY and KEVIN J. DWYER, The Enterprise 11/05/2005

With a single shot from his pistol, Beaumont Mayor Pro Tem Audwin Samuel drove off attackers who hit him in the head with a beer bottle in the driveway of his North End home Thursday.

Samuel, the Ward 3 councilman, phoned police at 11:56 p.m. to report the incident at his home in the 3700 block of Bowen Drive.

He told police he was driving home when he noticed two vehicles following him, one a white four-door car and the other described simply as a burgundy vehicle, according to a Beaumont police news release.

Samuel said four men got out of the cars and approached him as he got out of his car after getting home from his law office Thursday.

One of them told him, "I want to talk to you," Samuel said in a telephone interview Friday night.

Samuel said he jumped back in the car, started blowing the horn and reached for his handgun. Family members inside the house did not hear the horn.

Samuel said one of the men opened the car door and hit him in the head with a bottle.

When the attacker, whom police described as being in his 20s, saw the gun, he yelled to the others and they ran off, Samuel said.

Samuel said he fired one round at them before his gun jammed.

Samuel, who was shopping for a handgun for his wife during the Friday interview, said he normally carries his gun when traveling or working late at his office.

He said he was glad he had it Thursday night.

"Had I not, I probably would have been seriously injured or dead," Samuel said.

He said he and his wife both are taking classes for concealed carry permits.

He said he did not know why he was attacked.

The mayor pro tem was taken by private car to a local hospital, where he was treated for a laceration to his head and released.

Samuel said he was feeling "pretty fair" Friday.

Beaumont police were investigating the attack but had no suspects or motive for the crime late Friday.

This smells funny already. It'll be interesting to see what other information comes to light about this.
Only 1 shot before his gun jammed ?

This may have been the only time Mr. Samuel ever fired his weapon. I have met him and he's not the gun toating type. Hopefuly, he'll get some proper training.

People generally do not change their habits even after possible life-altering events.

I know individuals who have purchased firearms, shot one clip or cylinder full, and call it reliable.

Yup, with FMJ or RNL ammo at that. A point that wasn't brought out in the newspaper account was the shot he fired broke the back window of his viehicle

I agree with the funny smell.
When the attacker, whom police described as being in his 20s, saw the gun, he yelled to the others and they ran off, Samuel said.

Samuel said he fired one round at them before his gun jammed.
Playing monday morning quarterback, from what it says here, which is the only info we presently have, this guy shot at them while they were running off. This sounds like bad juju to me. To my limited thinking, if they are running off then perceivably the threat has ended. Remain alert and phone the law.

Samuel, who was shopping for a handgun for his wife during the Friday interview, said he normally carries his gun when traveling or working late at his office.
He said he and his wife both are taking classes for concealed carry permits.
So, he doesn't have a CHL yet, but admits to carrying a gun in the car while traveling? I'm guessing that since he is a public official that this won't be a test case for the new traveling law.

I am glad it turned out alright and that the gentleman is aware of the best tools for self defense and that he and his wife are taking the proper steps to get thier CHLs. If this story has been about one of us (read not public official) then I believe that the tone would have been a bit different and that we would be spending time in the iron bar hotel for UCW at minium.

I agree w/ yall on the stink. If it is lagit, I hope he gets some training w/ his CHL also. Sounds to me like a bought gun, fired 6 times then put in the vehicle & never cleaned. Last time I renewed there was a security officer there that laughed about the fact that his had not been cleaned since the last time he qualified. The instructor stood behind him & pushed the slide home after each shot. Before I left I told the instructor I thought he should have sent him home for failure to show proficiency & safety. The dirty dry weapon was bad enough but laughing at it is out of bounds of reason. My .02 & maybe worth 1/2 that.

Tuesday is City Council day in Beaumont. My department has the honor of decorating City Hall for Christmas being the Electrical General foreman I had to be there. I spoke with Mr. Samuel about this incident after the meeting. He says he's going to get some instruction and put in some trigger time. The gun is a 9mm Ruger that he had fully checked out by a gunsmith after he got it back from the police. He said the gun ran flawlessly for the smith.

He got a pretty bad cut over his right eye from the beer bottle the still looks like it has a way to go before it's healed. I tend to believe the gentleman's story.

I'm glad the gentleman is alright.

That said, I still don't like , again if what's presented is accurate, is thta what he is getting away with would land most of us in jail with at least one felony charge. Carrying a weapon in the vehicle without a CHL and shooting at fleeing suspects.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I haven't seen anything to the contrary.
