Gun Mag Recommendations?

Post by lawrnk »

I've subscribed to Guns and Ammo, and Shotgun news. I read a ton, and need more subscriptions. I'm not a hunter, so I avoid those mags. Any suggestions?

If you would like to read about a new AR every month, I suggest Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement. (just kidding, its a good mag)

SWAT is a good mag also.

I'm not familiar with that one, thanks. I bought special weapons, but I think it is quarterly. I decided not to subscribe, mainly because it is doubtful I will be dropping 5k on a weapon until my kids are out of college. I subscribed to "shooting" magazine earlier today. That makes 3 now. I need a couple more.

American 1911'er I mean American Handgunner is a good mag for the quality photographs. It is the only one I subscribe to anymore.

What are you looking for in a magazine? Pictures of the latest gear, really nice pics of classic guns/pistols, reviews of equipment, articles on different gun topics, self defense stories, handguns only, and concealed carry issues are a few topics to get you thinking.

Guns is a sister magazine to American Handgunner. It also has a lot of nice pics. I like John Taffin's articles and I think he writes for both.

There's Gun World. I met D. K. Pridgen last year and he writes for them.

Combat Handguns is another choice with excellent articles by Ed Lovette.

Handloader and rifle are a couple that have a lot of articles on traditional firearms in them.

I'll second Combat Handguns. I personally am a big fan of the Massad Ayoob articles, and the "it happened to me" accounts.
and the Gun Pr0n is cool, too.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

Majority of the mags are nothing but advertisement which includes all the so-called "reviews."

I am currently interested in "Special Weapons," "Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement," "Tactical Weapons;" however, I just read them in Wally world as they are expensive.

I stopped all my magazine subscription.

US Concealed Carry Magazine is okay. It's different that most gun mags in that is caters to CHL holders. IMO the layout and photography in the magazine is amateurish, and the writing isn't as polished as the mainstream magazines.

The majority of gun magazines are mostly advertising for the "latest and greatest" gun that you can buy. I just can't trust any gun or product review in them. Although, I still buy "American Handgunner" and "Combat Handguns", once in a while.

I like Combat Handguns and American Handgunner. American Handgunner is sometimes refreshing to read, it seems they are a little less politically correct than the others.

We got a free subscription to Guns & Ammo from Natchez, but even though it is always interesting, I find it too broad for my tastes since I don't hunt etc.

MrsFosforos got a free subscription to Women & Guns, which I have found to be good reading for both genders.

I second Wild Bill observation regarding Concealed Carry magazine.

After receiving the latest issue I'm letting my subscription expire.

It seems to be the same stuff over and over and overly complicated articles on self defense.

I'd really like reviews on weapons, good photos, CHL and tactical gear, and articles on the 2nd.

You should already be getting American Rifleman as part of your NRA membership. Though not specifically a "gun" magazine, I like Safari, which comes with my SCI membership, though if you're not a hunter, you probably have no interest in it.

Handloader and Rifle are a couple of good publications.

American Handgunner is OK, as is Guns . . . though I only occasionally subscribe to the latter, when I get a $9.99/year offer . . .

Shooting Times, Guns & Ammo, and most others are just advertising vehicles for manufacturers.

I agree and am doing the same by letting my membership expire. The value for the (relatively) large amount of money is not there with this publication.

I've got WAY too many gun magazines sitting around the house. Some have been read cover to cover many times over. Shoot me a PM if you'd like and I'll let you know what I have sitting around. Be glad to ship them to you if you'll re-imburse postage after you recieve them.
