New CHL Qualification Target

Post by ThunderDownUnder »

As one of the other instructors posted some time back, the DPS is switching to a new CHL shooting proficiency target as of 1 Jan , 2006.

I received a BIG target shipment today (178 lbs!). My UPS driver, a former Desert Storm Marine, waited for me to open to boxes and check out the new targets.

DPS has switched to the B-27 target. Either Blue, Green, red-orange or black can be used (with the recommendation from the DPS range staff being green). The human eye is supposed to "see" the color green better.
Also the CoMass has been lowered to teach shooters to aim for the center of this target. Hopefully this will reduce the number of shots that go over the shoulders from heeling under stress or from non-participant reactions.

I opened the wrong box though and got into my practice targets , the B-27E (E-economy which is 10' shorter than the standard B-27).
Note : the qualification target will have 10" added on the bottom of this.

The scoring target is as follows:

Same qualification scores apply : Max-250, Pass- 175 ( which is ridiculously low).

When the UPS guy complained about the weight of all those targets, I told him wait until next week when the big year-end ammo shipment is delivered !

I guess there's a reason why they want to score a head shot only 3 points???

At the 3 yard line, I'd like to think I could make them all headshots, just to say I did...And they still count for 5...

Oh well...All COM it is then... ;-)

I think my wife would not have fired her perfect score with that target, that's a shame.

We've had a shipment of these in for a few weeks now, but have still been using the blue Amazon Man until January. Methinks the new one is somewhat easier to shoot a possible - oblong 12" X 16" 5-ring, as opposed to 12" circle.

Why

Post by tomneal »

Does anyone know why the DPS changed the target?

Is the new target more common and less expensive?

I need more clues

Post by tomneal »

DPS changed this target based on their investigation into the shooting involving a Trooper in Schwartz, TX. I won't get into details, but their reasoning seemed sound to me.
Sorry
This isn't enough of a clue.

Anyone have more key words for the internet search?
