Houston LEO Shot

Post by nedmoore »

It makes me wonder, how can a person who has had done so much training let this happen. What did the guy do wrong? We are taught as CHL'S to Stop, Control, and Neutralize. Cops deal with these things everyday, time and time again. Most people never have to deal with situations like this. How can the common law abiding CHL be prepared when a such a threat arises? Just makes me think... When would you draw? Would the BG have to have a weapon?

That article doesn't have enough information to even guess...

Let's hope he pulls through.

I am sorry, I did not read the link before I posted, I had watched the story on the news and then went to their website and made the link. The LEO made a stop, found pot in the car, found a handgun in the car, cuffed the BG and then ?????

On the tv his fellow officers said that he was a veteran LEO, and was the "go to guy when it came down to taking down felons".

Right now, he and his friends and family need our urgent prayers. Mine have already gone up. This is just happening too often. They all need to be covered by our prayers.

Blessings!!

Holy Cow!!! I used to live in an apartment complex on the block/street where this occurred. After watching the related video, my complex was immediately next to the one where this occurred.

Honestly, I'm not so shocked that the crime is there, but I am shocked that the LEO apparently let his guard down long enough for the unfortunate situation to occur. Prayers have been and will be said for the LEO and his family.

Hope the officer makes it and I'm glad he was wise enough to wear armor. Still, I heard the suspect was cuffed with his hands in front of him and that bothers me. No veteran officer, certainly not one who has handled felons, would normally cuff a suspect this way. I want to know how those hands got around to the front. And it sounds like the suspect had or gained access to a weapon and that suggeststhe possibility the suspect wasn't thoroughly searched. Lot's of questions for later but the priority now is the officer's well being...Let's hope the he pulls through.

If cuffed behind the back it's not impossible getting them to the front if you stretch hard. I see on the news report he was a deputy constable in Pct 6 with 3 yrs on. No telling what happened yet and hard to say if we will ever know. I too hope he pulls through completely.

I've seen contortionist types that can step through their arms so quickly it will ake your head spin (kinda like jumping rope.) When I was a LEO and was 5' 9" and 130 lbs (Yeah, I was SKINNY!) I could do it, but not too fast. I have also seen folks that can turn their arms and them rotate over their head as their shoulder sockets do some weird things. While they still are in cuffs, they now have a much better advantage on use of their arms.

Prayers are up for the LEO and his family.

I've seen that too and that may well be what happened. I hopefully the officer pulls through and eventually we can learn what happened.

Thielepape had pulled over Jesus Gilbert Reyna while working a second job as a security guard for the complex. Authorities say Thielepape found marijuana and a gun in Reyna’s vehicle and arrested him. He cuffed Reyna and put him in the back of his unmarked car, but Reyna managed to get his hands to the front of his body and grabbed Thielepape’s gun. A violent shootout ensued. It appears the bullets ripped across the length of a parking lot at the complex, hitting several cars. When the shooting ended, Reyna was dead. Thielepape had suffered gunshot wounds to the neck, groin and ribcage.
This is a reminder to some that you need to practice RETENTION methods.

I'm 6' 2" and I can easily step through cuffs. Can't do any of that other fancy stuff you mention, but I can rotate my foot 180 degrees. Its kinda nasty.
