Going to NAPE: Can you carry at Geo. R. Brown?

Post by Doug.38PR »

I am going to NAPE day after tomorrow (http://www.napeexpo.com/home1.asp) and am wondering if you can carry at the George R. Brown Convention center. I know gun shows have a 30.06 posting...but sometimes people put those up only to cover all the bases. Is the Geo. R. Brown a city or county building that you are forbidden to enter? Can you carry there or have I missed something?

I recall that they have some non-30.06 wording on the glass next to the entrances. I've carried there previously for other events but it has been a while (1 year?)

IIRC, it's also owned by the City of Houston (or is it Harris County?), so 30.06 signs would not be enforceable.

So does that mean I can carry there, or because it's owned by the city or county, I can't carry there by law?

(city parks and such aren't off limits...what about facilities?).....in fact....what if it is owned by teh city and there is a "no guns" sign. What does that mean?
I don't want to walk out of there back to my car at 7:00 after dark for the rest of the week unarmed in downtown Houston

I posted the same question back a few months ago. THe general consensus was/is that it is up to the event organizers as to whether or not to post 30.06. Since it is city owned the convention center can not be posted and enforceable. In fact it is not...at least it wasn't in October. However, those leasing the center for an event may post for the event.

Here is a link to the convention center's rules. Check out chapter 15. You're good to go unless the sponsor of the event decides to post.

They can post a sign but if the property is owned by a governmental entity that's an exception to the application of 30.06.

Bottom line: anything owned by any state, county, or local government entity, is legal unless there's a state law saying it's not. Short version: courts, polling places, school buildings and administration building, are still in effect. Everything and eveywhere is lega. Until next week.

So the 30.06 sign that the gun show promoters post is also unenforceable at Geo R Brown, reliant, Pasadena, etc?

Most here will say yes. A few will say no, because it is the people running the gun show posting and not the owner of the premises. I agree with those who say yes, it is unenforceable.

But there's always the "You can beat the rap, but not the ride." philosophy. You could be arrested, processed, jailed, and even tried before the judge/jury declared you not guilty (or DA drops the case). Many don't want the pain and cost involved with all of that.

Well, I went, I carried and now I'm back free as a bird :thewave :txflag: :fire

There sure were a lot of Houston Policemen there checking our NAPE badges at the door. No searches. There sure were a lot of rules and directional signs for NAPE around...no 30.06 though.
First day I carried my Official Police in a paddle hip holster...wow by the end of the day after all that walking around (and there was a LOT of walking. My leg muscles are still sore) and my hand bumping against the holster it was starting to get irritating.. I opted to carry the gun in a shoulder holster the next day. Much better.

With all the other men there that were wearing a sportcoat and tie or suit I'll bet you a dollar for donuts I wasn't the only CHLer there carrying. A lot of them there were staying at the surrounding hotels in the downtown area
