"Man shoots burglar at residence

By Janice Arnsdorff

An Arnold Hills man shot an intruder in his home shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday. The victim, Myles Edward Petty, 19, remained in the ICU at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler Wednesday morning.

Ray Reed of Arnold Hills encountered two subjects in his garage on Lynn Dell Drive early Tuesday morning, and a scuffle ensued with Petty. Reed attempted to hold Petty at gunpoint while his wife called 911. Petty lunged at Reed and was shot in the chest with a .38 caliber pistol. During the scuffle the second intruder fled on foot. Petty was airlifted to ETMC-Tyler.

Around 3 p.m. that afternoon Henderson County Sheriff's Investigator David Faught arrested Petty's accomplice, Justin O.D. Hord, 19, who was staying with Petty in the Cedar Creek Lake area. He was awaiting arraignment for burglary of a habitation Wednesday morning in the Henderson County Jail."

It irks me to no end when reporters refer to the perp as "the victim".

Chalk up another one for the good guys anyway.

Agreed. Should be "the criminal with the victim selection deficiency..." Glad the true victim is okay and I assume a no-bill will be returned shortly.

Two things...

First...

Are both Petty and Hord Tyler residents...And not displaced from some storm ravaged part of our country???

Second...

Think of some of the things you can do to encourage someone you are holding at gunpoint from "lunging" at you???

Or better yet, figur out some of the ways you can convince some one "not" to try and lunge at you when you have them at gunpoint...

I see these types of things reported all the time...Why does someone think they can get to you before you shoot them, while you have them
"at gunpoint"???

This would be an excellent discussion by itself...

It usually seems to be because of drugs, lots of booze, insanity, extreme egotism, or a combination... The most entertaining storys seem to come from crackheads. They'll try anything to get another fix.

Maybe the scumbag criminal stumped his toe and fell forward towards the real *victim* while the real *victim* was getting a good sight picture on the scumbag criminal and it then a good time to pull the trigger !
:)
sorry, couldn't resist that one.

In 1986 I worked for a joint State/DEA Drug Task force. We ran a warrant on a home in Gregg County (Just east of Longview), Texas. A Rusk County deputy who was on the Task Force held a suspect at gunpoint using a 1911. The suspect would not get down on the floor. The deputy released the thumb saftey and suspect thought the "click" was a miss fire. He jumped at the deputy and he took a hollow point in the chest. He was also taken to ETMC - Tyler. He lived and was handed 15 years TDC! You have to admit most bad guys do not rate high on intelligence.

I'll bet he knows what that "click" means now.
