Drills**

Post by Ranger+P+ »

Here are a few drills we use quite a bit--we integrate rifle training with these also and work on transition.

Figure 8 Drill

I got this from Rob Pincus--you can create a 360 degree range on a typical square range. You will need a partner. Take 4 targets of some type. Number them 1-4 with a marker. Place 2 markers on the ground of some type, empty ammo boxes, etc. 7 feet apart from each other about 10-15 yds from the targets. With gun holstered, start walking a Figure 8 between the markers. Your partner will then call a number and you will engage that target. Remember to focus on the core fundamentals, along with lateral movement at presentation. Gun battles are not static, people move when shot at. This drill incorporates these things. You can vary the distances for rifle or even shotgun transition. Reloads and malfunction clearing need to be drilled on also. Get creative--it is a very fun drill.

Dot Shoot

I started using this drill when I worked with the State Dept and DEA in South America. There are several good varieties of these types of targets at LEtargets.com My favorite is the numbered shape/color target. Basically the way this works is you drill at 7, 10, 15 and 30 yds. From holster, A partner will call a number/shape/color etc.--you then engage. We used to allow our partner to load our gun before the drill to force us to reload or clear a malfunction while engaging. This drill sharpens your cognitive skills greatly. Do not focus on speed so much as smoothness.

Hope this helps. Stay Safe. :fire

While I would love to have any opportunity for live-fire training I especially like the idea of one's training partner loading the weapon to induce a FTF. I wouldn't want it done for every magazine full. Just that there should be a higher chance to encounter a FTF or other malfunction than one normally finds.

Shooting Glocks I don't have opportunity to practice malfunction drills as often as with other makes. ;-)
