Extractor question

I learn a lot while reading the trade dialog between buyers & sellers on the gun forums. Question. Many times when Kimbers are on the block the question will be asked if it has an internal or external extractor. What are the pros & cons? Which is better? Thanks in advance.

Now you've done it...

There are strong opinions on both sides of the internal vs. external debate.
All I can say is that I had a bad experience with a Stainless Kimber Ultra Carry that had the external extractor. I sent it back to Kimber more than once and it still had occasional extraction failures. Not acceptable for a carry gun.
I now have one with an internal extractor and haven't had a single malfunction.

Thanks & I will. To me, worth about half of the 2cents I claim, the external would seem a little easier to fail. I will read a lot tonight.

I figured there were strong opinions but guy so far all I have seen is worms. I asked for answers. You 2 wouldn't be avoiding the Q would you

I've read alot about Kimber's external extractors failing. That's why I only have one Kimber and the rest are Springfield Armory. Not that my Kimber has given me any problems, but I don't want to be one of those statistics. lol.

Naw,

I've heard good and bad things. I believe there has been enough posted on other sites to suggest that Kimber may have had some quality issues (external extractors out of spec.), for a period of time.

Others, think the design itself is problematic. If I had one that wasn't giving me any problems, then I would just keep it clean, keep good springs in it, and not worry.

Basically, for a carry gun...if it won't give me 200-250 failure free rounds (before cleaning), then I won't carry it...regardless of make or reputation.

Any pistol can fail. If someone has "proven" that the external extractors are likely to give you a problem at some point, I am not aware of it.

I had to tune the internal extractor on my Para when it was new, so they are not immune either. In fact, I replaced it with a Wilson Bullet Proof later, just because it was sturdier built. That was ten years (and countless thousands of rounds) ago. No bobbles yet!

Kimber makes an excellent 1911. If yours does not give you any problems...you've got a keeper.

Whew......., all that and you still don't have an answer.

OK I will bite

I have the Kimber with the the external extractor and never had a problem. I carry the Colt Commander and I have never had a problem with it either. I personally like the internal best for whatever it is worth.
