CMP M1 Garand

I am interested in getting an M1 Garand. I have been looking at the CMP and I was wondering what experiences everyone else has had in the CMP Garands. Are they worth getting from them? I am just wondering if all they had left was junk....

There seem to be a lot of guys raving about their service grades ($595).

I have a Springfield SG and an H&R SG on order, both still months from shipping.

I own 2 Garands from the CMP north store.

I bought 3, one (rack grade) would not hit paper at 50 yards. The other 2 (service grade) are great.

I lived in Ohio and was able to pick them out myself.

If you buy them by mail, they pick it out of the pile and mail it to you. They do give it a once over to make sure that it has all of the parts, but that is all.

That being said, buying one at a gun show for 800 to 1,495 (new). Just buy one and odds are you will get a decent shooter that you can shoot with.

You do have to do a competitive shoot and belong to a club (NRA, TSRA, local recognized club) to be able to buy from them. See their rules.

If you want to do a project, buy just the reciever and do the rest of the rifle new. The Service grade are ready to shoot.

Actually, you no longer have to shoot in competition.

They have changed the requirements so that even a CHL fulfills the 'shooting activity'.

You must provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures. Your marksmanship related activity does not have to be with highpower rifles; it can be with smallbore rifles, pistols, air guns or shotguns. Proof of marksmanship participation can be provided by documenting any of the following:

Current or past military service.
Current or past law enforcement service
Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).
Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
Concealed Carry License.
Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training.
FFL or C&R license.
Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.

No proof of marksmanship required if over age 60. proof of club membership and citizenship required for all ages.

I have bought alot of guns from CMP over the years: (3) Garands, (5) M1 Carbines, (3) 1903's- all Service Grades and all of them can shoot the lights out. I also bought one of their Kimber .22's for my nephew, which is a great little gun. Being a veteran, plus a member of the American Legion, I met all the requirements. I would recommend to all vets, go ahead and enroll as a member of the VFW or AL and you can take advantage of the CMP. In my opinion, I would only buy Service Grades or better-- as a previous post mentioned, you get a better firearm, internally and cosmetically. The only drawback to the CMP is the processing/shipping times; they can get a little tedious (up to 6 months on one of my Garands) so be forewarned.

I also own some Enfields, Mausers, K-31, Mosin-Nagants, etc--all great guns and fun to shoot.

For those fellow "crufflers 'out there, I urge you to become a member of one of many Curio/Relic Forum's-since I started collecting, I have learned a ton from them. The one I use is http://www.gunsnet.net out of San Antonio.

I bought the CMP M1 Garand Special. It's the one they rebuilt to as new. All I can say is SWEEEET.

I enjoy my CMP Garand, and still have my DCM '03-A3 ($19.00). I have to admit that the Garand has become a safe queen since I have not been participating in IDPA and three gun matches, but I have always enjoyed Garands.

My question is this:

I am in the process of waiting for my plastic to arrive from Austin.....in the meantime, can I use the Certificate of Handgun Profiency that I received from my instructor for completing the CHL class? Will CMP accept this cerificate?

I just bought and received a service grade Garand from CMP. I haven't gotten out to shoot it yet, but hope to do so this week. My gunsmith said it had 95% matching parts, a 1965 barrel that didn't look like it had been shot much and lugs that looked like new. He said it was the best looking Garand he has seen in 20 years from CMP. So you obviously can still get a very good Garand from CMP.

Got a bit of good news, today. I have two orders placed for M1's. I placed an order for a Springfield service grade that was acknowledged by email on 1/22. On 3/18, it showed up as an order in the CMP e-store, just under two months. Hopefully, it will ship in the next month.

The other order was for an H&R service grade. Received the acknowledgement email on 2/8, so hopefully it will follow before long.

Since I have yet to order mine....I'm just wondering ....which is a better mfr. of the M1 Garand - The Springfield or The H&R? My guess is that they are of equal value...

The more I write the more I want an M1 Garand......

I love mine! Springfield Garand and Inland Carbine, both service grade.

The H&R is likely to be of later manufacture than the SA. Whether that translates to less wear is indeterminable.

There is some talk on the CMP forum that the H&R's might be slightly more available than the SA. That MIGHT translate into a quicker turnaround.

If I was serious, I'd get an order placed and get in the queue. Personally, I wouldn't go less than service grade.
