Hi all, I was just wondering what kind of tests are in the Tx CHL class. Is there a written, and if yes how many multiple choice questions are there and what are some of the general topics? Also, the shooting part of the class, how is it like and what are the requirements?
I am asking because my wife is not sure if she has enough practice time to pass the shooting part. She has only been shooting a few times, about 250 - 300 rounds total. Thanks in advance
There is a written test - 50 questions. 14 multiple choice, 36 true/false. There is nothing on the test that is not covered in the class. Well, at least in my classes. I can't vouch for each and every instructor, but that's how it's supposed to work.
The shooting proficiency test is 50 rounds, a timed course of fire from distances of 9 feet, 21 feet, and 45 feet. You only have to place 70% of the rounds on the target to pass. The target is a standard B-27 silhouette. The minumum qualifying caliber is .32. A semi-auto is highly recommended.
You have 3 opportunities to pass both the written and shooting test. It is very rare for someone to not pass the class.
I've been through four different classes with four different instructors. As far as the written test, paying close attention in class is all that is required to pass it handily.
There will be one or two 'trick' questions on the test, but they will have been covered thoroughly in class.
If your wife has fired 250 rounds without difficulty, she'll qualify. The people I've seen struggle were either first time gun handlers or those who chose to use an unfamiliar gun. Afterwards, she won't believe she was actually concerned about not passing.
If you have the opportunity, take her to the range, see that she is not doing anything unsafe, and let her shoot some more.
The one thing guaranteed to fail someone on the shooting part is unsafe gun handling.
The shooting and written tests are easy. As I recall, where the instructor makes his pay is filling out the forms and fingerprint cards correctly and doing the fingerprints themselves (assuming your instructor also does fingerprints). These were tedious! One hint from our instructor -- when the form asks for "country," don't put "Republic of Texas." DPS's sense of humor is somehat constricted, apparently...
My wife shoots ok (sometimes better than other times) at the range but she's doesn't take tests well .. any tests. I am just hoping she would have no problem when test time comes.
You need a 70% on both tests. They are all multiple choice with a couple true or false thrown in. I would bet that most folks could take the sights off their handgun and still qualify.

I believe my test was all true/false. ~50 questions or so. It was a very simple test. We actually went over it out of order about 5 minutes before taking it. I got a 100 on it and my friend I came with got a 94 I believe, simple stuff. There were a few trick questions which I seen through, though apparently they got my friend, not like it mattered anyway, he still passed. As for the shooting, they graded me 242/250, not sure how that works exactly... It must be simple because while I had considered getting my CHL before, I hadn't studied at all, and my friend contacted me on MSN at like 2:30AM and told me he had a CHL class starting at like 8AM, so I decided to come along with him and his dad on about 4 hours of sleep.
