What irks you most about anti's stereotyping of gun owners?
I feel a rant coming on.
Anti-gunners usually like to refer to gun owners as hicks, hillbillies, and basically uneducated baffoons who prefer violence over diplomacy. Of course, the obvious implication being that they are intellectually superior and more sophisticated than you or me. This makes me especially upset considering that I am more educated (as a blessing from my parents and the Man upstairs, lest you think I am starting to get a big head) than most people on this planet, let alone some random Brady Bunch sucker who ignores all the evidence implicating the failure of gun control. They almost seem shocked when I put together a cohesive argument for gun rights, and even after that, choose to remain ignorant with some snide remark like, "ok, go shoot someone, you gun nut." It's really hard to swallow my tongue and keep calm in a debate when I am basically insulted. Rant off.
Out of curiosity, what stereotype bothers you most in your encounters with pro-gun control pundits?

Don't get irked very often. Being a redneck hick that's only allowed to go to town on Fridays (after my bath), I don't get to socialize with them much.
I guess the thing that bothers me most though, is that they insist on breathing my air while wasting their time feeding me their illogical arguments.
I get so upset when they start "preaching" their "superior" opinions that I get mad at myself for not staying cool enough to slap them down with a single well phrased rebuttal. Guess I'll just have to work on that.

That which has always rubbed me the wrong way about them is that they have never learned to think for themselves.

Considering the inside scoop some of us received about the folks lining up outside the Supreme Court since Sunday to get seats for the oral arguments that were held today...
The media and its aggressive and open desire to interview and hopefully be able to portray gun owners as "hicks" (which is actully what he "insider" wrote about in his report today) is dead on right...The #1 and #2 guys in line were anything like that, so sad for the media I suppose...And considering that the main population of 50 or so people in line by this morning consisted mainly of law students reading briefs and other legal stuff while waiting proves everything to me...I would have loved to be there today, that was history in the making...
I would have probably been portrayed as a hick though, just for the way I talk...
I am so glad the media was unable to succeed in their mission...
So I would say the media "irks" me...But the solution is to just not give them much airtime in your household...They are easy to fix...

That's the point where you say, "If you really think gun owners are so dangerous, easy to provoke, and quick to start shooting in response to insults, why haven't you been shot long before now?"dukesean wrote:They almost seem shocked when I put together a cohesive argument for gun rights, and even after that, choose to remain ignorant with some snide remark like, "ok, go shoot someone, you gun nut."

I don't let them get to me anymore. I simply pull out my money and make another donation to a pro-2A group or candidate. I let their lies and distortions motivate me to convert someone or at least take the time to destroy the lies and distortions they hear from the establishment media. Don't get mad...get even. They want to say we are all white, male, wife beating, ignorant, etc., I say let them. And when we show up, with a smile on our face and an enthusiastic representation of who we really are the gun banners immediately are shown to be the liars they are. When the black 2A believer and the woman and the Asian and the Latin and the young and the old take a stand, the anti-gun nuts are shown to be who they are. Don't get mad. Get motivated.

It would certainly help your rebuttal if you spelled "buffoon" correctly.dukesean wrote:Anti-gunners usually like to refer to gun owners as hicks, hillbillies, and basically uneducated baffoons

But to address other posters, I am not their stereotypical gun owner: my parents are immigrants from Taiwan, I don't like killing any animals I don't intend to eat, and I can't fake a Texan drawl for the life of me (even though I'm 100% native Texan). Maybe people like me serve to prove that proponents of gun rights encompass a variety of demographics but are all united in our belief of a Constitutionally guaranteed right.

Re: What irks you most about anti's stereotyping of gun owners?
What really rankles me is when they try to take the intellectual high ground in another fashion.
"Common sense says . . ."
or
"Reasonable people will agree . . ."
Which implies that merely by disagreeing I have no common sense and I am not reasonable.
The other night my boss started to expound with one of those "Well, common sense . . ." at which point I cut her off and asked why she thought that I had no common sense, and how she could continue to employ me and sing my praises as an employee, which she had just been doing moments before, if she thought I had no common sense.
She started to backtrack, that she was not saying that, but I was in high dudgeon and would not let go of the issue and finally got her to admit that she had indeed implied that I had no common sense, if not said it right out.

Being called paranoid because I carry a gun.

Re: What irks you most about anti's stereotyping of gun owners?
They say "Guns Kill People!"
My reply is "No. People kill People."
They look at me like I'm the stupid one.
However when it gets to the point in the conversation where they ask me why I carry a firearm. I always like the look on their face when I tell them "Becasue a Police officer is too heavy"

The above, and the guy that said it worries him that I carry. (As if it were any of his business, anyway.)RedRaider wrote:Being called paranoid because I carry a gun.
I asked, "Why? What woman have you harmed that you are afraid of revenge or what woman are you thinking about harming that you are afraid that she will defend herself against you?"
Well, he wouldn't let me finish, but he sure sputtered and cursed a lot!

Gets 'em every time!!

Seriously, I see it as a control issue, especially when it concerns women defending themselves. Some guys just cannot be comfortable with a woman, who could be in control of her life/self/future/purity, etc. It's not just guys, either. Women, like Hillary, and many of the feminist bent, like to control others. My pet analysis would be that their own lives are so messed up that they cannot control themselves, therefore, they must control others or find something/someone that they can control in order to feel OK about themselves. They use control of others/things to keep their lives in balance.
Perhaps, these folks' guilt feelings are so high and close to the surface that others having a gun reminds them of what they have done that should have/could have gotten them shot?

For what it's worth, that's my shot at it!

Now that's funny!
I am going to write it down - hope you don't mind if I use it sometime. Actually, after thinking about it for a minute, I'll use it whether you mind or not. Man that's good.
