Did I buy a busted rifle?

Post by lawrnk »

After a month of a nightmare transaction from a WI pawn shop, I got this norinco on a composite stock recently, that I assumed to be an ATI Monte carlo stock. I used to have a norinco in original config about 15 years ago. If I lightly bump the clip on the right side, it simply drops out of the gun. This gap of space near the mag concerns me as well, when the pointed part goes. Anyways, this is very odd to me, and asking for advice.

Is that an SKS? If so, I have never seen a magazine like that one. I think that is your problem. The mags should look like this:

Actually SKS mags were designed for a fixed 10 round stripper clip fed magazine

I too have a Norinko SKS, I had a 30 round magazine like that and it was horrible in its effectiveness, I replaced with the non-removable 10 round fixed magazine and have gotten 0 failures since, the non-removable 10 rounder actually is removable..it just locks in place with the trigger guard and would require disassembly to pull the mag

Trying to turn a SKS into a high capacity AK spinoff just ain't worth the hassle of loss of reliability you get with the 10 round fixed magazine..that the SKS was designed to be fired using, its stripper clip fed, NOT removable magazine fed

P.S. Norinko is one of the "best" of the SKS heap, they go for around $250-300 so don't get rid of it...dump that lousy removable mag, then get a fixed and you will be amazed at how effective the SKS can and should be!

Oh...here is mine

I agree, the hi-cap after market mags are pretty "Iffy". I put the stock box 10 rounder back on my Yugo and it returned to complete reliability...then I gave it to my son...(what a Dad)

Well, I sure feel alot better. Thanks guys. Molon, I bought that fixed clip like you showed, I hope I don't have to do much mods or anything to get it to fit. Thanks much for all the advice!

Not hard at all..you will see once you get that fixed 10 rounder..it will drop in like it was designed to be there...because it was ;-)

SKS Carbine Disassembly and Reassembly Instructions
Steps 11-13 is the steps...very simple..pop the trigger assembly, insert mag, lock back in trigger assembly..done

My suggestion is to also find some SKS stripper clips for loading, otherwise you have to load them one at a time and that would be a pain!

I have a case of 1970's yugo brass 7.62 already on strippers, so I'll try that. Thanks.
