Fort Worth police were searching Monday for a gunman who fired into a home during a girl's birthday party this weekend, killing a woman and a 5-year-old and injuring four others.

The incident happened Sunday evening at a duplex in the 5700 block of Anderson Street. Witnesses reported that a shooter with an assault rifle or similar weapon fired into the building before fleeing in a car, police said.

Street Shell casings littered the ground outside the home where the party was held for a girl who turns 9 today.

Officers canvassed the area, near East Loop 820 and Berry Street, looking for the attacker and the vehicle.

The Tarrant County medical examiner's office identified the 48-year-old woman as Annette Stevenson. She died at the scene Sunday. The 5-year-old identified as Queshawn Stevenson was hit in the neck and stomach and died at Cook Children's Medical Center this morning.

Ms. Stevenson lived in the duplex with two daughters and four grandchildren, a friend said.

She was “a good woman, never bothered nobody, always helped people when she could,� said the friend, who identified herself as Betty Smith. “I don’t understand how somebody could come through here and do this.�

Not all the victims are related to one another, Lt. Paul Henderson said.

Police said the other victims include:

A 10-year-old girl who received three shots to her extremities and was listed in fair or serious condition.

A 36-year-old woman who was hit in the neck and stomach and listed in serious condition.

The birthday girl, who received bullet-fragment injuries that were not life-threatening.

A 12-year-old girl who suffered graze wounds on her scalp.

I read this in the paper this morning. First, the area where this occurred has a high incidence of drug and gang related activity. I would not want to be in the area after dark.
It would not surprise me if it turned out to be a case of the shooter getting the wrong address.
