What perceptions do you have of other states' CCW permit hol

I was at the range yesterday and I met a guy from Florida with his CCW permit. Great guy - however, as I was watching his shot placements...they were all over the place. We were using the traditional B27 targets at an easy 21 feet.

That got me to thinking.....

I fully understand that the Texas CHL Proficiency Test Requirements are:

CHL SHOOTING TEST
3 yards, 20 rounds

* 1 shot, 2 seconds, 5 times
* 2 shots, 3 seconds, 5 times
* 5 shots, 10 seconds, 1 time

7 yards, 20 rounds

* 5 shots, 10 seconds, 1 time
* 2 shots, 4 seconds, 1 time
* 3 shots, 6 seconds, 1 time
* 1 shot, 3 seconds, 5 times
* 5 shots, 15 seconds, 1 time

15 yards, 10 rounds

* 2 shots, 6 seconds, 1 time
* 3 shots, 9 seconds, 1 time
* 5 shots, 15 seconds, 1 time

My questions:

What Proficiency Tests (for CCW) do they have from other states? How do they compare with those from Texas?

Have you had similar stories of CCW Permit Holders who looked like they could barely shoot their handguns?...

I was just amazed that this guy had a concealed handgun license and he shot like that...

Florida accepts a number of training certificates. I don't know the details. Some states require no shooting test at all.

Florida accepts hunter safety classes and any NRA class but if he was anywhere on the paper he probably would still pass the Texas CHL test.

A few years ago I was considering moving to Alabama to go to college. I called over to the sherifs office in the county I was going to move to and asked about their CHL. It was 15$ done while you wait. They took your prints and ran you for arrests, thats it. Had to be there for school for more than 6 months before they would give it to me though. Plans fell through and I stayed in Texas for school.

I was thinking to myself about how many times I have read things like this on the internet. This guy didn't shoot well, his groups were all over the place and so on. I see the concern in that. I will stand up and say that shooting beside me in a line you might think the same about me. I don't shoot to make a big hole of multiple shots in the paper every time. I often shoot where I can see my groups when I am in a target mode. I even shoot eyes, a nose and mouth in the target to see how well I can do it. And, I can take my carry gun and shoot out a nice hole and never put another round where it can be seen from 7 yards. !5, sometimes I miss the hole. The point is, things aren't always what they seem. We all know that.

As far as other states are concerned, I don't care. I don't care as long as the bullets go into the criminal. I don't care if a LEO misses or a CHL or the old lady setting in her car and repelling an attacker. CCW requirements are meaningless when we consider criminals and the general public don't have to pass a useless test. LEOs miss. CCWs miss. Like was posted, it is up to the states as to if they even make their privileged shoot or just buy the ability to carry.

I am sure that info would be able to be found on handgunlaw.us if a person wanted to make a list of requirements. It would be an interesting thing to see just how different it is from state to state. Not enough for me to do it but, ...

When I got my first permit, from VA. back in 1998, all I had to do was fill out the paperwork, and provide proof of military marksmanship, pay the 50.00 bucks and I was Good to go.

At the range where I shoot, the life of a target holder is about a month. People hit the frames repeatedly until they collapse.

If someone is missing the center of the target by one or two feet at distances of 15 yards or less under ideal conditions, it's a little worrisome what they might do under pressure.

OK, but this guy was at the range practicing his skills to make his shooting under pressure better.

If I remember correctly defensive shootings (cops and CHLs alike) are all down around a 1 in 5 hit ratio. Maybe 1 in 4 for cops, but its not good.

Most permit holders will die of old age, never having fired their weapon in anger. If they practice thats great, if not they should be encouraged to do so. Lets not start attacking fellow permit holders just because we dont think they can pass a stringent shooting test. We have enough CHL enemies as it is. =)

I agree that we should not attack or ridicule other shooters. However, we should help guide them if they need it.

I have started a few people shooting handguns who had never shot before, or only a couple of times. They could all his the bullseye at 3 yards and keep it on the paper at 7. Consistently, dozens of shots.

Someone whose target looks like he's using a shotgun needs training. If they keep shooting that way (flinching, jerking the trigger, not using the sights, etc.), they are just reinforcing poor shooting habits.

I'm not sure how to tell them, though.
