Post by Paladin »

A new cross-service US military sidearm called Joint Combat Pistol (JCP) is in the works.

The 'Combat Pistol System' is to consist of:
-a Caliber .45 pistol
-Magazines (standard and high-capacity);
-Suppressor Attachment Kit
-Holster
-Magazine Holder (standard and high-capacity)
-Cleaning Kit and Operator's Manual.

When you are limited to FMJ - take the biggest FMJ you can get. Especially if concealment isn't a big deal.

If our troops had access to good JHP ammo - I doubt the 9mm would be such a poor choice.

+1! I bet good 9MM ammo would be cheaper than .45 ball. It is hard to argue that a good 45 will always do the trick....but you can't load your gun with the other sides ammo if it is a .45.

While they're at it, why not dump the 5.56 x 45mm poodle shooter and go back to 7.62 x 51mm?

Have you ever shot anyone with a .223? It's not as much of a slouch as you would think. Unfortunately my best friend in Iraq has had to "take casualties" and the M-4/M-16 did the trick every time.

Did my military service entirely in CONUS, so I've never shot anybody. I've just been hearing and reading that the reviews on the M4/M16 are mixed. The official opinion, of course, is that the 5.56 is the deadliest round in history, but the Army has considered adopting the new 6.8mm SPC cartridge, at least for special forces. The 6.8 is supposed to give the rifle better range and terminal ballistics while replacing only the barrel, bolt, and magazine. Somebody who's shot people with the poodle shooter must be dissatisfied with it.

Or better yet, .30-06?

.30-06? Weenie-beanie.

.45-70, a real man's cartridge.

SF has been using the .458 SOCOM round for a while in thier 14.5" M-4s.

I've even seen some ODA guys running around with 10" .458s.

All you need is a different upper and you have it, but I would say between the "poodle shooter" and the .458 you should be fine.

I've seen .308 uppers as well.

A .308 upper will not fit on an AR15 lower receiver. Magwell is too short.

AR-pattern rifles firing .308 are larger than AR15/M16. They are AR10/SR25 etc. DPMS and Bushmaster both also sell .308 rifles.

Well, we could go all the way up to .50BMG, but at least there are pistols chambered in .45-70, so I could go for that.

Don't I know it - I fired a friend's and drew blood on my hand from the recoil - no bruise, just blood seeping out of my hand about one inch square.

I know this is off topic, and not intended to hijack the thread, but my son sent me this last week. Not sure if it is true, but I LMAO after I read it.

While interviewing an anonymous US Special Forces soldier on his
sniper skills, a Reuters News agent asked the soldier what he felt when
shooting members of al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

The soldier shrugged and replied, "Recoil."
