For all of us who keep our guns in our closets...
My roommate's house in houston got broken into last sunday afternoon around 4PM. His parents were out of the house on an errand, and were only gone for about 2 hours. The thieves stole his father's 30-30 and some jewelry, and ransacked his room and his parent's room. They went into his closet and found and opened all of his gun cases, which were hidden behind some clothing. If my roommate didn't have those guns down here at the job site, he would have lost 5 or 6 guns. Just a warning for those people who (like myself until recently) keep their guns in the closet...

Did you direct this post specifically at me?
Man, I really need to get a good gun safe..., and soon!

4 p.m. in the afternoon, broad daylight, that is crazy. I broke down and bought a gun safe a couple of months ago and could not be happier about it. When we go out of town I stuff it until I can barely shut the door. Laptops, Jewelry, car keys, etc. Anyone in Houston thinking about getting a safe should look at lone star safes. They have a store on FM 1960 close to I-45.

I need to get a safe, but don't really have a big enough place for one. I have several guns in the closet, but at least they wouldn't get all of them as I have several scattered throughout the house as well.

I have "dummy" stuff lying around. NonWorking laptop on my desk when i am gone, same with a broke cell phone. I have a fried xbox too in the game room. Weak walmart gun safe in the bedroom with an really badly pitted SKS and a nonworking Jennings .25 in it they can easily find the key to open. Harwin "Rolex" in the cheap safe as well. Good stuff in a real safe not in the house. Thief really thinks he scored till he gets home, although I imagine it will go straight to a pawn shop.

Now I figured out where the term "coming out of the closet" came from...
I think you fellers are going in the right direction with the whole gunsafe issue...Go check out the sticky threads and see what has been discussed about the particulars...Planning is everything...Because any gunsafe (IMO) is a step up from hiding your property or stowing it off site...

My dad just bought a safe from them recently also. He was very happy with the safe, service, and delivery...nedmoore wrote:4 p.m. in the afternoon, broad daylight, that is crazy. Re: For all of us who keep our guns in our closets...
I went many years keeping mine in gun cabinets. Now they were good cabinets, bolted to the wall in a closet and I felt fairly comfortable with them, but still in the back of my mind I knew they were not as secure as a safe. Last December I laid out the cash to get a real safe, 700 pounds of hi-temp fire rated safe. I do not have the words to express the peace of mind I had after the safe was installed. We leave for the weekend now and I never give the guns a second thought because I know they will be there when I return.

Maybe you can get a metal door with a couple of deadbolts and some reinforced door jams for that closet.5111 wrote:I need to get a safe, but don't really have a big enough place for one. I would bet my neighbor's paycheck that he was robbed by someone he knows or who has been in his place. My roommate's house in houston got broken into last sunday afternoon around 4PM. Just a hunch.

Re: For all of us who keep our guns in our closets...
on the closet angle, what do you guys think of replacing the closet door with some sort of heavy lockable door thats lockable from the inside to use as a safe room? I would rather shove my girlfriend in there and not worry while i clear the house or have her hide in there while she calls 911 if I am not home. Anyone done anything like this? anyone got a link for sources on parts/service? Sorry if this is a threadjack, I think this would accomplish a level of added personal safety plus give you the ability to lock the closet when your gone and put all kinds of goddies in there that wouldnt go into a gun safe.
(everyone with a gun safe I know personaly has it sooooo stuffed with lovely guns that i dont think I could shove my laptop, my portable DLP projector, etc into it. )

I'm doing great, almost done with the job down here. Come end of Turkey season I'll be back in Houston, finishing up the degree. Been really busy for the last few months...
Re: For all of us who keep our guns in our closets...
I keep most of mine in a closet. But the closet has a locking door knob on it. Plus it is alarmed. Even though I am at home now if someone goes in there without disarming the alarm it goes off. Since not even my wife knows how to do that, not much chance of anyone else but me anyway. I keep two handguns in small safe in the master bath. it is bolted down to the shelf and into studs in the back wall.
The gun safe in the closet is a cheap one my first wife bought me 20 years ago. It is light weight and I have it bolted into the studs in the wall as well. Since my gun family is pretty complete at the moment my next purchase by years end will be a nice BIG heavy duty safe.
