Empty Holster

Post by ProudNativeTexican »

Is there any problem wearing an empty holster? While I am waiting to get my plastic I have been looking at holsters most likely a leather IWB. I was wondering if those few times that you are not allowed to carry into a business (I know that many will not enter) do you also remove your holster or do you still wear just no handgun?

I carry OWB most of the time. If I have to disarm, I will usually just take it out of the holster and put it in a scabbard holster in the console or glove box, then wear my holster in. Even though you no longer are carrying a firearm, I would suggest you continue to keep the holster concealed just as you would if carrying.

I almost always remove the holster so 1) the gun is protected; and 2) so I can take my suit coat off in the courtroom when the opportunity arises. There are precious few other times I don't have my gun.

I usually remove the holster and all. I carry a pocket bug in a pocket holster and my primary in an IWB holster. In regards to removing just the firearm, I would be concerned about re-holstering with either holster as the trigger is not protected.

Milt Sparks recommends taking the holster off so you don't deform the leather. Kydex is fine to wear IWB without a gun.

I recommend removing the holster for a different reason than the others have mentioned. It is good tactically to remove it. If something bad does happen, the empty holster (if seen of course) could make you one of the first targets, just as open carry could. And most of us are not as careful about empty holsters staying concealed as we are about our weapons.

Remove both the gun and the holster. In addition to the above reasons, I've had the unfortunate occassion to feel my holster on my side, assume I have my weapon, only to find later I'm wearing an empty holster and the gun is waiting quietly in my safe. That's a false-positive you don't want! :nono:
