Robbery suspect fatally shot at west Fort Worth doughnut shop

FORT WORTH -- A robbery suspect entered an west-side donut shop early Friday armed with a BB rifle, but a good Samaritan who came to help a shop employee had a shotgun.

Conclusion: the robbery suspect died from a blast of 12-gauge buckshot to the chest, police said.

The incident was reported about 2 a.m. at the Happy Donuts shop, 109 Roberts Cut Off Road, said Lt. Paul Henderson, police spokesman.

The suspect was Richard Lane, 45, of Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

"What I understand," Henderson said, "is this particular suspect was known in the area for possibly other criminal activity -- other robberies, other burglaries."

The neighbor who shot the man was not arrested.

The case will be turned over to a Tarrant County grand jury for review, however, "which is routine in incidents of this nature," Henderson said.

The shop's employee told police she was making donuts when the suspect entered the business wearing gloves and a black ski mask, Henderson said.

She tried to escape, but the man chased her and struck the back of her head, Henderson said.

"It's very possible the suspect used the BB gun to strike the donut shop employee," Henderson said. "But only the suspect knows for sure what he used to hit her."

The neighbor heard the commotion, grabbed a shotgun and came to help, Henderson said. He added that he did not know what sort of contact the suspect and the neighbor had before the shooting.

He also did not know if the BB gun rifle resembled an actual firearm.

Paramedics treated the shop's employee, but she was listed in good condition, Henderson said.
