firearm education in public schools

Post by MBGuy »

One day last week my son in the third grade went on a field trip to the county fairgrounds. The topic was going to be topics such as recognizing snakes, wild animals, grasses, etc, and.......firearms safety. I thought, well, I sure hope they just don't put a bunch of paranoid fear in these kids towards firearms. My son loves shooting his .177 Gamo, and he's even shot my P239 around half a dozen times. I teach him safety and he's learned well how to safely use his pellet gun, so I didn't want him to get confused by some "authority" figure teaching him to just stay away from them completely. Nope, I'm happy to report that they actually taught them how to handle firearms safely, ranging from handguns to rifles. They covered on keeping them pointed away from people, to use the safety, where to put their index finger and not to touch the trigger until ready to shoot, etc. They were even taught how to eject a magazine out of a handgun (A Sig according to my son), and how even though the magazine is out, there could still be one in the chamber, and how to empty the chamber. I'm not sure they did a hands on with that one, since I don't think my 8 year old can pull the slide. They were taught to only handle firearms under adult supervision.

One interesting note is that they played the video for them of the DEA agent shooting his own foot!

After passing a "test", they got a little badge to wear from the TXDPW. My son proudly wore his even the next day!

After seeing how school districts are eliminating anything having to do with guns lately, I sure am glad I live out of the city!!!

In 1995, I actually took an elective class in high school called, "Wildlife Education". That's when I took my hunter safety class! We actually took in as a high school elective! Don't see much of that around anymore. I'm glad your son got to take such a cool class, especially sponsored by his school. That's awesome!

That's encouraging.

You would be surprised at the number of educators that enjoy shooting and are pro-RKBA.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.
