Homeowner Shoots Teenage Burglar
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Police say a homeowner took the law into his own hands Tuesday and defended his property from a burglar. Police believe the burglar is responsible for other crimes in the area.

Investigators say 17-year-old Alexander Aguilar broke into a home on the 2300 block of Larry Drive in Dallas Tuesday afternoon.

The 64-year-old homeowner said he was awakened by a noise. Police say the suspected burglar had broken a window and was able to enter into the back door.

The homeowner confronted Aguilar, who then allegedly charged at him and threw a backpack at him. The homeowner shot him in the arm and held him until police arrived.

"The homeowner won't face any charges. You have a right to defend yourself and your home," said Dallas Police Sgt. Steven Shaw. "This burglar is actually someone who has active warrants out. We've been trying to catch him for the last two weeks."

Police say the suspect was skipping school at the time of the crime.

Methinks the media is misquoting the police here.

This doesn't sound at all like the police saying he took the law into his own hands to me!

If exercising his right to defend himself inside his home is considered "taking the law into his own hands," then me exercising my right to vote is also "taking the law into my own hands."

What do they usually do the editing for these stories in? I'm thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to write some filters that would flag an article for certain "spin phrases" and highlight them for review.

Remeber, news outlets are trying to catch the publics attention. If they have to use spin to get it, they will, even if it makes all look like nuts for wanting to defend ourselves.

As far as rationalizing the spin by citing the need to grab viewer attention, one would think that the inherent tragedy of the violent death of a 17 year-old due to his having gone so far off track in his life would be dramatic enough in and of itself without the need to sensationalize it.

Well, the boy wasn't killed, but yes it is sad that this 17-year-old was skipping school to rob people, and then got shot.

Sounds like the boy has been busy.

Obviously has had plenty of time....must have been out of school for a couple of weeks practicing his trade, otherwise, why couldn't cops have simply arrested him at school? Do they not do that anymore?

They where trying to catch A burglar. They didnt know that the Burglar was THAT kid that was skipping school.

if charged as a juve he would probably get more "time"
if as an adult, a slap on the wrist and a promotion to this kind of work
