Colt Gunsmith needed - Houston west side

Post by thankGod »

Hi guys and gals,

I need a little help and advice. I'm in need of a good and reputable gunsmith to perform some work on my Colt Series 80 Government Model .45, hopefully located on the west side of Houston.

Regarding the help part of the above sentence: The trigger will fully drop the hammer of my pistola without the grip safety engaged. Needs a little work. :grumble

Regarding the advice: I currently have Bomar target sights that were milled into the slide. Since my eyes are aging a bit, I have trouble aligning the "black" sights and have to dot them with some "whiteout". I think I would like to replace them with some that have higher visibility. Any one with some suggestions to replace these "milled" in sights?

Thanks

I use Paul Hubbard a lot up in Conroe. He is very good with 1911's and very reasonable.
My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.

I've used Ed Vandenberg for 20 years and he's great with 1911s. However, he's located across from Ellington Field on Hwy. 3 (a/k/a Old Galveston Rd.).

Thanks for the replies.

I called Ed Vandenberg earlier this morning and left a message. I have not heard back from him yet. I'll give another call in a few minutes.

How did you know the hammer would fall without grip safety engaged? Testing?

He probably did a 1911 function check. It verifies that everything is working as it should.

eric,

To answer your question, yes I was just giving it a once over to see if everything was still in working order.

I usually carry my Glock 19, however 1911's... there's just something romantic about them! So, I was considering looking into a Kimber Pro or Ultra of some sort for a carry pistol. Which got me to thinking that I need to go put a few through the Series 80 (which I've owned for a couple of decades). I have not shot it since the beginning of February of this year. So I was checking it, empty of course, and the hammer fell without me engaging the grip safety. It does not happen all the time, but if I pull the trigger a few times in a row as a test, the hammer will fall.

So, I now have an appointment with Ed Vandenberg tomorrow evening.

thankgod, you better be careful! I was carrying a Glock also when I decided to try the 1911 for the VERY SAME reasons you mentioned! Now, I've got an Ultra Covert II and a new CTAC 1911 slide! You're very right, I love my Glocks to death, but there's just something romantic and mystifying about the 1911. Ya just can't explain it. I'm afraid the bug might be biting at you just like it did me! ;-) :thumbs2:

I don't know... I see a lot of posts where people are asking for help finding someone to work on their 1911.

I don't think I've seen any posts where people are asking for help finding someone to work on their Glock.

Maybe that's because the Glocks are "beyond help." :biggrinjester:
