Beginner’s Guide To Carry

I was researching caliber information, and I found this very interesting website:

http://loneranger2008.wordpress.com/200 ... led-carry/

He briefly covers most of the calibers out there, giving the "good" and "bad" about each one, and then covers holsters and such-like. A very informative and interesting read!

Not a bad article. Well written for the most part, but he doesn't give any reasoning for his ratings/decisions.

For example:
Despite its popularity the .380 ACP is not adquate as primary carry weapon with any ammunition.
(sic) Why? I know of many others who would disagree with him on this. But this was his entire comment on the subject of a .380 as a primary carry weapon.

Yes, I noticed that, too. Despite some of the caveats, there is good info in the article. I especially appreciated the pictures.

actually, I'm only halfway down the first page and already found a bunch of misinformation just talking calibre. At least, much of this information is highly debatable, not open and shut as the author suggests.

 Sorry about that.

It would be neat if the members of this forum would put together a real nice "howto" type document, along the same lines as the webpage linked above, except peer reviewed by the members here to ensure accuracy. That would be handy!

Nothing to be sorry about. Concealed carry is a very personal thing. What works for you may be the absolute worse for someone else. So much of the subject is just opinion. I do like to see the opinions backed up with a reason even if it is personal and not scientific.

+1 compvest. It's always a listing of opinions. At least the author could elaborate on the reasons for his opinions. But some of his opinions are not backed up by commonly known facts, so it draws the rest of them into suspicion.

There are many sources of information about CC on the web, and all of them are like this.. mixture of opinions and facts with little distinction. I guess you just have to evaluate the background of the author and figure out which of the opinions serves you the best.

The article reads like something from an airline magazine. It can be read end to end in less than 30 minutes and is only meant to be a birds eye view of the subject. That being said, going into the detail that some of the good forum folks are looking for would have turned it into a very boring book and would have been a turn off for the "unwashed masses" just checking out this "Concealed Carry Thing".

As far as balistics, I think his point is simply "bigger is better". The fact that a 9mm jhp can expand to the size of a large grape (my words) makes the smaller calibers much more potent than they use to be so that now "bigger isn't always better". The reference to the Moros tribesman was a very good one. The point of controlling recoil in both the caliber section and handgun selection section i thought was right on and must be taken into account by the person making the puchasing decision.

Regardless, I thought the article was pretty good for someone just getting started and even though I didn't agree with some things, I just love reading about guns. :smash:

Personally, I would have liked to have seen a bit more on gun manufacturers but that's just me.

:fire :cryin

Definitely someone expressing their opinions and listing the equipment that works best for him. My list would be different but only because those items are what work best for me. =-]

Yes, indeed. Some have a dramatic distinction.

I would add the author's perspective, experience, willingness to change and how close those opinions allign to your goals.

How do we figure out or test which opinions serve us best? How do we define "best" ?

I think interaction with a good instructor & good students at a class is a vast improvement over internet text for learning about concealed carry issues. It gets you engaged in learning and involved in a way that typing & reading doesn't. In that situation you can have a conversation and get a better understanding, without distractions, and see/feel /test how valid the information is for you.

The guy lost me when he started worshiping of the almighty Glock and praising its perfection.

I hear you! I own the "praised and honored" Glock 23 myself and I thought that was a bit over the top! I bought it because a friend of mine carried one "over there" and said he'd get it in the mud, sand, water, w/e. He'd rinse it off w/ clean water, re-holster, and it functioned fine. To me that screams reliability, so I got one too.

He's very set on what he likes. The lesson I think we should take from it though is to find what works for YOU and use it. It's like Goldielocks and the Three Bears. Too big. Too small. Just right... Find what works for you, practice/practice/practice, carry with confidence and be alert. =-]

As others say, it's a pretty superficial read but I believe it's not meant to be anything else. One bit had the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end ...
In another incident I was loading my 2 year old daughter into her car seat in the back of my Jeep Wrangler when I noticed a look of fear on her face. She was terrified and pointing behind me. Instinctually I drew my handgun as I turned to find 4 men who had formed a semi-circle around me. Had I not been armed I’m quite certain that I would have lost my money, my vehicle, possibly my life, and worst of all most likely my daughter who was buckled into the back seat
Wow. Like, wow ...

That's scary.

You guys are lucky to have the right to defend yourselves. We don't. :mad5

What's interesting to me is that he didn't comment on (good or bad) the 1911 platform as a carry weapon, and yet a HUGE number of those who CCW carry some form of 1911 - as evidenced by the fact that a significant number of the holster pictures he shows are of holstered 1911s!

It's just personal reference.I myself carry 1911's 4-5" all the time.

I don't found a lot of his comment on pistol, holster, ammo make sense to me. I wonder if he wrote them down based on his own experience
