Non-slide stopping safety on 1911

There is an article in Combat Handguns that shows the Novak NeXt pistol. They beveled the edge so the safety doesnt block the slide. I have wondered in the past what purpose it serves to stop the slide, its not like you can accidently rack a round. The article made a lot of sense in having the slide operational while on Safe, both safety wise and tactically. Any thoughts on a downside to this? Because I think my poor guinea pig 1911 might be seeing the mill soon. Only thing I can think of is it might require a little training to get used to if you dont ride your thumb on the safety when you shoot.

Also Novak got rid of the grip safety which i am not fond of but can live with, since it has never malfunctioned.

I'll keep mine just like it is. I like my 1911 safety features and have much better things to spend my money on.

Well it wouldnt cost me anything, but time. But that was my question, how is it a safety feature to lock the slide?

That is what I was interested in being able to do.

If it falls and does go off, as in another poster's thread recently, the slide being blocked stops a second ND.

Good point Stephan, What about FPB in a Kimber? Would that stop the second ND?

Current design also prevents the weapon from being taken out of battery. This could easily happen unintentionally with the modification (never a good thing).

That should stop even the first ND if it is working right.
