Katherine Blake FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ― A North Texas mother was robbed at gunpoint while getting money out of the bank. Thanks to her quick thinking, she was able to escape.
It happened at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bank of America near Seminary and I-35. Gabriela Perez stopped at the ATM on her way home from work so she could get money to pay her phone bill.
Police say the suspects may have been camped out at the bank waiting for someone to rob. As soon as Perez drove up to the AMT, they were at her window with a revolver. She said the gun was pointed at her head.
"They were yelling at me the whole time," she said. "He said, 'Go ahead and take the money out of the machine.'"
But she kept her cool, and that played a key role in her escape. "I don't want to die," she said.
The 37-year-old says she couldn't stop thinking about her six-year-old son who just had surgery on both of his legs. After one of the robbers reached in her truck and put it in park, she decided she had to do something.
"I tell him there's a police officer. When they turn around to see if there's a police officer, I put my truck in drive and I left," she said. "I don't care if I hit them. I just run away."
Police say that's exactly what you should be thinking.
"If that's the case, you want to do whatever it takes to get out of that situation," said Fort Worth Police Lieutenant Paul Henderson.
Police encourage others to always have a plan in case something bad happens.
"If that means pulling forward and making your way through someone that is attempting to rob you and do you harm. Then that's what you do," Henderson said.
The robbers got away, but police are reviewing the video from the surveillance camera on the ATM to see if it shows the suspects' faces.
"If they don't do nothing to me, maybe the next person they shoot or something," she said.
There are key principles involved in Personal Defense... Alertness, Decisiveness, Aggressiveness, Speed, Coolness, Ruthlessness and Surprise
While she failed on Alertness for not making sure the area was secure, she was Decisive, Aggressive, Cool, Ruthless, and Surprising, then drove off with Speed.

Yeah! if she quit her night job and collected welfare tp support her kids. She wouldn't have to be out at night. Maybe she could work during the day and have some strangers watch over her children.
I don't know if this Mom is single and has much help raising her kids, but when one has to to work to feed their children compromises must be made. Her mistake, as I see it, isn't so much being out late, but not being armed.

Or she could have just gone to the ATM the next morning, when it was daylight. She was getting money to pay her phone bill. Do they have places where you can pay your phone bill at 2:30 am?
I think the lesson here is to know your surroundings and do your best to avoid bad situations (such as ATMs after dark).
Despite that fact, I think she did a great job considering her lack of Alertness in the first place.

People never think it will happen to them, until it happens to them.
Since she never even made it out of her car, her going for a weapon probably would have just gotten her killed. Her "tactical" response was right on.
God was watching and protecting her.

I see everyones point concerning the time frame, but I worked nights for a long time, and Im not going to completely alter my life schedule because of it. I should be able to go out whenever I want, just like criminals do. I refuse to stay inside during nightfall because "criminals own the night", especially because many crimes happen in clear daylight.

I'm not advocating a total change of lifestyle. I'm just pointing out that an ATM at 2:30 in the morning is an inherently dangerous place; even more so in a large urban center. In my mind, it was just a bad idea not to go get some cash after going home and getting a little shut-eye.

I agree Glock 23.
I've worked a lot of swing and mid shifts in my working career, and now that I have insomnia, I frequently go shopping from midnight on. I will not let the time of day dictate when and where I go.
But, then again, I'm 6'4" and 200 lbs. And very well armed now. There is no way I would let my wife go out at these times by herself.

Exactly; I work midnight shifts, and I'm not going to screw up my sleep schedule just because some people think that going to WalMart at 2AM is asking for trouble. I use pretty much the same level of caution for a 2AM trip as a 2PM trip, too; it's actually easier at night because with less people overall, there are less to watch.
Of course, I also have no problem stopping at the entrance to the bank parking lot and sweeping the area with a taclight before pulling up to the ATM, so that may have something to do with it.

I know your right I know it. I really do, but a part of me cringes when we fault the victim. The woman was the good guy here. What about the bad guy? Maybe it makes sense to be safe in our behaviors. But it should make us all angry that we allow the bad guys to dictate how we live our lives even if is the safe thing to do.

Please understand that I'm not trying to blame her for anything. I feel exactly the same way you do. I just think that it would have been more prudent to go to the ATM in the daylight. I'm armed, and I don't think I'd go to an ATM at night, unless I had no other choice. All other facts aside, by keeping her head on straight, she made the best of what could have become a very bad situation.
Why are you guys blaming the victim...who cares if she went out at 02:30 or 14:30, the scumbag criminals that prey on people at ATM's are to blame!
Uggh..with you guys psycho analyzing her this way you would blame the girl wearing the hot clothes that she got raped because she deserved it!
STOP BLAMING THE VICTIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In this day and age it almost doesn't matter if its daylight or dark (emphasis on almost) because more and more badguys are getting more and more bold because of overbearing laws against the law abiding giving the lawless a handup on their victims, yes I guess you can say that another one of her mistakes is she wasn't armed, but could she have deployed said weapon safely and not have gotten herself or her kid shot by the criminals.
