New toy and my first FTF!

Post by pbwalker »

I was able to sell some software yesterday (Windows Server 2003 - worth $750) for $500...so naturally I immediately headed over to the local Academy with the intention of getting a Glock. I was thinking of the 19, but was open to other ideas. I was checking it out and like how it felt and handled, but it just 'seemed' boxy and I wasn't digging that. I even checked out one of the Taurus compacts and hated the fact that my pinky didn't sit on the grip. All I could get was my middle and ring finger on it. Then I caught the Springfield XD's. I have heard nothing but good about them and they seemed to be priced just right. I checked it out and LOVED how it felt. It seemed nicely balanced and just seemed sturdy, solid, and dependable. So that was that. I now own a brand new Springfield XD .45 ACP (4" Barrel).

I took it to the range today along with my 'first baby', a S&W SW9VE. Now, I know that Sigmas get a bad rap and I can understand it to some extent. But I still like it and for the price that I paid ($250) it can't be beat. I'll be keeping it forever...sentimental value. :)

100 .45 rounds and 100 9mm rounds ready to go. Of course the first one I fired was the XD.

There really is no way to describe the difference between the two other than to say "Night and Day". I mean, WOW! My accuracy improved. My handling improved, and the time between shots to get back on target was greatly improved. I can't claim to be any kind of expert being that I have only fired the Sigma, 9mm Beretta (in the service), .38 Special, and a .44 Magnum...but this weapon knocked my socks off. It has quickly moved into the role of my primary carry once I get my plastic in hand.

And I had my first FTF today...on my Sigma. Stovepipe jam...800 rounds through it so far and one FTF. I guess I can't complain.

So I want to check with all the XD folks out there...can you recommend any good IWB holsters? I'd like to entertain both leather and plastic as I sweat and don't want to rust it out if I am carrying leather in the summer. Also open to any 'cool' or 'must have' accessories.

Hi, and Congrats. I have several XDs in .40 and .45 and have excellent results with a Comptac Minotaur http://www.comp-tac.com/catalog/product ... ucts_id=95.
It has a leather lining that keeps the Kydex (plastic) off of you if you sweat a lot, like me. I am not a slight person and it hides well under a tucked shirt np. My son was unable to keep from printing, but he's too skinny and wears tight clothes and is too vain to change his wardrobe a little. These guys wrote me daily emails updating me on the build and expected delivery. approx a week.

My carry of choice is an XD45 compact, but do carry both my 4" service and 5" tact using the "slide" type that fits all the XD family of pistols, including my XD40 sub...and 4" and 5" and XD9s...so I can carry any of my XDs with the same holster.

All of my XDs have been absolutely reliable and accurate beyond my limited abilities.

Another on my list is "Tucker" http://rlcompanyusa.stores.yahoo.net/, but its a 7mo wait. Everything I read gives them high marks...leo forums, etc if you have the time to wait to have him build one.

Good luck....you can't go wrong with either of those outfits, they stand behind what they make. Call them, they will be glad to help.

Congrats on the new XD.

Based on your thoughts, I would recommend either the Comp-Tac Minotaur or the Tucker "The Answer."

Let us know what you choose.

I would agree with both options. I have the Comp-Tac Minotaur and absolutely love it - I ordered it and in a week I had it. I am still waiting for the Tucker "The Answer" - I did order it several months ago - and expect it in July sometime.

Like others here, I recommend the Comp-Tac Minotaur holster. I've got one for my XD 45, my Glock 22, and my Beretta M9. All are comfortable, durable, and perform their expected duties very well. Here's a pic of my XD carry setup:

It is thin, flexible, inexpensive as well as tuckable. I bought and use it for my XD45 but almost any auto will ride in it from my SC XD9 to my Glock 21 and 30. It would be good choice for a starter holster for anyone. I found I use it for most of my guns in the summer heat.

I got one like this for winter carry. It is in XD45 as well and is somewhat universal too. Don't like that either do not cover the full length of the XD45 but, for those prices, I live with it. I have had no problems but you might in S.A. with the moisture. I usually use a plastic IWB when I go to humid places but I have not found one that is as comfortable as leather in the long days.

I like my XD45 too.

that's a monster of a 45 man. congratulations. A buddy of mine has one for his daily carry. He's very happy with it and it was one of the pistols i looked at when i decided on my Taurus. It was a close call between that and the Taurus for me. good choice either way.

I highly recommend the Milt Sparks holsters. (www.miltsparks.com) there's a bit of a wait, but they're near perfect holsters imo. I'd pick up a cheapy to use while you wait.
