Request for Pics of Holster Wear

Post by BigBlueDodge »

Well, not having a CHL before I never carried my pistols in a holster on myself. I always kept them in a a padded pistol case when in transport or in the safe. Now that I picked up a cheap Don Hume holster I've been carrying the pistol around the house in preparation for when my plastic arrives. Practicing drawing has gotten me to think about holster wear on the gun. Do you guys have some pictures of your guns with holster wear that you could share? Please share the type of holster (kydex, leather) and how long you've been using the gun with the holster to get your amount of wear.

This is the best pic I have of carry marks. I have carried this gun for 3yrs. It is stainless steel frame so the "Character Marks" from holsters are less evident than the marks that seem to grow on my "Using Guns". Front of serrates, at the slide stop, front of frame. The front of the frame wear on stainless steel is less evident than on an allow frome gun.

Some may do a lot better than me but I tell folks if you are going to carry daily & practice regularly it will get marked. Mine do anyway.

My Kimber CDP shows holster shine on the very forward end of the frame & the front of the trigger guard. I have carried it for 2yrs. Son is now carrying the last one. In 2 yrs mine now looks like his after I carried that one probably 6yrs & him 2.

I carry in leather at least 80% of the time. Probably closer to 90%. Kydex is harder on finish than leather.
I keep my guns clean & working totally reliable. If they look like they have been carried a lot it is because they have.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Both, thanks for the pictures. My intent was to see which part of the guns is most affected by holster where (side of slide, top of slide, trigger guard, or where ever). I know that this is somewhat holster dependent. Also, I was wanting to see if there was a particular coating style that holds up more than others.

Longtooth, I have almost the identical gun as you (only difference being mine has target sights and not novak sights) and I could not imagine carrying that gun everyday. With loaded clip, that gun is heavy, heavy, heavy. It was a main reason I have these smaller, lighter Kimber models now, because I knew if I had to carry that gun all the time, then I'd eventually stop carrying it.

So you can see wear on a blued gun, here are a couple of pictures of the holster wear on my Hi-Power. I have been carrying it in a Galco Combat Master leather OWB holster for a little over a year.

The only holster wear I've found is what is pictured here... on the corner edges of the slide, and only at the front.

every corner that slides in the holster will eventually see wear marks.

I have a friend that has been shooting the same gun in USPSA for about 10 yrs. He has wear/rub marks down the side of the slide where is thumb rides the slide as he shoots.

I do not carry it every day.
I do carry it all day on a regular basis. A Tucker HF1 & Rafters Gunbelt go a long way in making the perceived weight a lot less noticable. I sude to wear a tool belt & this rig along w/ 2 10rd mags is much lighter & less floppy & bulky.
Top end gear makes carry comfortable as well as comforting.
