Can not find a gun safe in DALLAS!

Post by TexasGlock23 »

I just got back on an expedition through the jungles of Mesquite. First I went to Walmart off of Beltline and 30, the guy in there was a complete ass. They had none, nor would he try and see if he could order any. I went to Academy next, a guy walked in right in front of me and he got the last one they had. I guess I should have drove faster. So then I cruised on over to Lowes on Beltline and 30 and they had none! I know I can find some of the rather large and pricey ones all day. I want to stay in the $500-$600 range! Sorry I had to vent somehow. Carry on.

Greetings--

I've seen some at Sam's Club. One never knows exactly what Sam's has at the moment, though.

I know it's a bit of a drive, but what about the Gander Mountain in Corsicana?

Bass Pro in Grapevine and Cabelas in Fort Worth both have pretty big selections in your price range.

I bought one from Sam's Club. They had 2 models and they seemed pretty similar to me. The cheaper one ($500) had an electronic lock and the more expensive one ($600) had a "normal" dial lock. I went for the cheap one - I think it was just a model year difference.

Great value for the safe. Good size and weight and construction (haven't really tested it though - want to keep it that way) at a fair price. Worth the membership fee alone.

Gander Mtn. (at least the one in Texarkana) has safes on sale right now. All the way from your price range, up to about $2,500.

I recommend that whatever you do, stick to the "dial" or tumbler safes...

Even though I know some here have the push button combo pads...And they do work...In the long run, I think that system is prone to wear out and fail at the most in-oportune time...

I do think you are doing well to shop around and see whats out there...Thats the best thing to do for major investments like this...

One other thing I'd recommend you factor into the purchase...Is consider the UL fire ratings, if a fire-resistant safe is what you may be looking for...

That adds a little more cost to the deal. but in the long run, the guns and other items you store in there can be a little more protected than the "cheapo's" you may find at the average retail outlet...

I basically went with a specialty store that sold only safes of this type...And offered deliver and install where you wanted it...I figured if I am buying one, why not pay, and let them help you with the hard part...

Good luck...

the fireproof is what I am looking into, but it is not a must right now. Just something worth the money. I need one. The gun show is comming back to mesquite in early march. Iam going to see if there are any in my range. Thanks.

I was in your position a while back and I got a terrific deal on a Liberty, but that's another story.

If I was doing it again and had a limited budget, I would go to Academy and buy an American Eagle which are built by Cannon. Cannon is the only safe mfg that will pay for shipping on your safe if it is flooded, in a fire or if there is an attempted break in. Everyone else will do the repair or replacement, but you have to pay shipping.

I think thats a good direction to go...

My safe is rated at 1450 degrees, for 25 minutes...

I figure the house will be burned down to the slab with the gunsafe standing all by itself as the smoke clears...

Placement within the structure should be a consideration as well...Being a volunteer firefighter, I figured the best place was in a room against an outer stud wall, near or beside a window...

I also had to deal with a flooding issue as we took quite a few inches during a tropical storm a few years ago...So I sandwiched 4 cinderblocks between two 1/2" plywood "plates" cut to match the footprint of the safe would elevate the safe enough where I might not have to worry too much about things getting damp in there...If it ever did, we would have bigger problems to deal with than wet firearms...So I'm doing what I can to protect those investments...

Besides the safe is about 550# empty...Its not going anywhere...

If you do choose to have the safe brought to you and installed inside, consider the path that they are going to have to take to get it where you want it...If they are good, and most specialty gunsafe companies are, they should have one of those expensive, leveling and stair walking dolly's...Electrically powered etc etc...

Mine did, and we were in and out in about 15 minutes from tailgate to office and out the door...

We moved couch and other funiture in the area that we figured would get in the way and make it harder on the carpet and tile, and risk cracking and tear damage to the same...

Pre-planning is extremely well worth it to guys who have to make these delieveries and installs...

Just some ideas I had from a while back...
