I went to renew the registration for an old car today at the courthouse. I had made a few other errands and was about ten feet from the door of the courthouse and remembered " I can't carry a concealed handgun here!" I quickly went back to my truck, disarmed, and then stood in line for about an hour. Take care.

I am not sure if they do this everywhere, but here in Lewisville you can do your vechicle registration at Tom Thumb. There are no lines to deal with and they only charge $1 extra. Definately worth it in my opinion.

Here in Austin both tax assessors offices have drive-thru lanes. The one near my house (near ABIA) is never busy.

I just renew online, pay the $2 convenience fee, and avoid driving and waiting in line. Plus I can carry at home.

I left the firearm in the truck going to the courthouse (Lubbock St. location)..I had my hand on the handle about to pull the door open to go in and I remembered I had a full magazine of .45 ACP rounds in my pocket. After a trip back to the truck got thru ok, even though I had to take my steel toe boots off

Oh another thing..if you carry a mag in your pocket..clean it out regularly...I found that when I pulled it out of my pocket (been in there daily for about 3 months) it was jammed so full of pocket lint it would NOT feed, the follower was jammed down and was full of crud!

Haaa! What a timely post.

I just got back from renewing the registration on my wifes vehicle. Nacogdoches County Courthouse has been newly revamped and they now have two walk through metal detectors (as well as wands). A friend of mine told me about the new addition couple of weeks ago.

Expecting to have to walk through it, I left my pistol out in my vehicle and went inside. Sure enough, two deputies there at the metal detector. I greet them both and start taking all things metal out of my pocket and putting them into the basket.

First my keys, then my pen, my cell phone, then my pepper spray and knife. When the last two items came out... the deputy nearest me just looks at me , and says "you can't take those into the courtroom".

I told him "I'm not going to the courtroom, I need to renew my registration" (which is done at some windows right behind him). He says to me "you don't have to go through the metal detector for that" and then he kinda chuckled. He waved me around the detectors and I had my new registration in under 2 minutes (thank God for small towns). Anyway, both of them real nice guys. Acted like they deal with folks like me everyday.

I noticed that the NEW exit was just down the hall from the deputies and that anyone could just walk in. I guess they would be asked to stop if noticed, but maybe not.

No you can not carry into a courthouse.

§ 46.03. PLACES WEAPONS PROHIBITED. (a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly possesses or goes with a firearm, illegal knife, club, or prohibited weapon listed in Section 46.05(a):
(3) on the premises of any government court or offices utilized by the court, unless pursuant to written regulations or written authorization of the court;
(b) It is a defense to prosecution under Subsections (a)(1)-(4) that the actor possessed a firearm while in the actual discharge of his official duties as a member of the armed forces or
national guard or a guard employed by a penal institution, or an officer of the court.
(c) In this section:
(1) "Premises" has the meaning assigned by Section 46.035.
(f) It is not a defense to prosecution under this section that the actor possessed a handgun and was licensed to carry a concealed handgun under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code.
(g) An offense under this section is a third degree felony.
