Change of address - Old License

Post by CodeJockey »

Hello,

I recently moved, and I got my updated plastic in the mail yesterday. I think I remember that we are supposed to mail back our old one, but there was nothing in the envelope except my new card. I had hoped it would come with instructions. Anyway, if anyone can tell me what I need to do I would appreciate it. Do I simply shred it, or do I mail it back. If I do mail it back, can someone tell me where I mail it to. TIA!

You are not obligated to return the old license when you change your address. The relevant law is GC §411.181.

You have to return the license only when going from non-semi-auto to semi-auto, AFAICT.

I'm sure one of the instructors in the forum will be by with better information than I, but as I recall, DPS was requesting that the old card be mailed back to them. Legally, the only requirement is that you not be in possession of the old card, so shredding it should technically be all that is required, but I remember from somewhere that last year DPS started requesting instructors tell their students to mail them back.
