Not allowed to use Reloads for CHL?
We were told we were not allowed to use re loads that we have to use purchased approved ammo for our shooting qualification. Does anyone know why? I have been practicing with our reloads and dont feel as confident shooting with factory ammo.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Not allowed to use Reloads for CHL?
I'll throw out a few ideas:
1. Liability for those around you and/or the range. I know of one place that requires you to buy from the store that hosts the class which is the second idea.
2. Makes more $ for the instructor or helps pay for the rental of the place it is conducted at.
3. Not making ANY allusions to the quality to which one reloads but perhaps just to reduce misfires and delaying the process. (and it's a weak reason because factory ammo can misfire)
4. Maybe another weaker reason: to make sure you are shooting a fairly comparable load for the caliber and not just spitting wad cutters.
At any rate, please have faith you will be able to accomplish the task of showing competency. If you can handle your firearm with safety and hit paper consistently, you should have 0 problems.
Good luck!

It's probably an indoor range and they don't like the lead dust. Maybe they don't want you shooting 44 magnums or armor piercing ammo either.

I shoot there once a week sometimes more and always use re loads. So I would think it wouldn't be liability reasons. They also sell re loading supplies.
I am wondering if it is a rule for obtaining your chl or a range rule at this point. I searched and wasnt very successful at locating specific ammo requirements online for the chl.
Thanks.

It is either a range rule, or the instructor's rule. The DPS has no restrictions on ammo for CHL students, although they do have restrictions on ammo for instructors when qualifying at the DPS range.

There is no legal requirement to shoot factory ammo. Ask your instructor why he is requiring that. Maybe he thinks that it's the same rules as his instructor class.

There are no DPS rules requiring Factory Ammo for CHL qualifications.
They are rules imposed by the RANGE owner specifically. Or the Instructor that works for the range or has an agreement with the range.
The DPS requires that instructors NOT use reloads when we do our bi-annual qualifications at the DPS range. Or ammo is checked before we shoot. But that doesn't mean some instructors don't sneak in their reloads when we actually shoot - I've seen it done
I there is ever a K'BOOM at the DPS range DPS will not be held liable because they told us - no reloads.

Re: Not allowed to use Reloads for CHL?
This reminds me a a general question I asked on the list before in a thread concerning the use of laser sights during CHL qualification which never received a reply from any of the CHL instructors on the list. The question I asked was:
That has my curiosity going. I was under the impression that the CHL training requirements were standardized by the state. How much latitude does an instructor have to impose requirements that go beyond those imposed by statute or regulation? Could you impose a minimum caliber of .38 if you desired? Could you require everyone to shoot one-handed with the weak hand? What are the limitations on the instructors ability to impose restrictions based on personal belief or whim? Can some of the knowledgeable instructors here please enlighten me?
Can anyone provide a definitive answer to this? I assume that the answer would also cover the use of reloads covered in this thread.

Get a couple of empty factory ammo boxes from the trash at the range to put your reloads in for the test. What a bunch of hogwash.

I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

I thought of this too, but unfortunately for her, all of my reloads have silver primers. Only boxes I have are winchester boxes and I haven't seen any winchester ammo from the factory with brass case and silver primer.

That and the mixed head stamp would be a dead give away. You may have to go buy a $12 box of ammo.

Find a different CHL class.

I already paid for the class , sat through the 10 hrs and then was told no reloads. So I dont see any option but to go out and spend money on more ammo, after I spent a couple of hundred dollars on supplies less than 2 weeks ago. This should have been relayed when I signed up for the class. Wouldnt be so bad except I shoot there at least once a week and even bought a membership to the range.

Re: Not allowed to use Reloads for CHL?
Well, I guess some are gonna have to color me in with a differing opinion on some of this one ...
After allowing reloads for CHL qualifications for close to 10 years, I changed that policy at our range a couple of years back. The primary reason was that the guys who seemed to brag the most about their reloads were the same ones who often caused everyone else delays when their guns either stopped up or blew up. Then we got to listen to excuses - when we needed to be shooting. I just got tired of the time it cost me and everyone else compared to what little more $ it costs for a reloader to buy a box of factory ammo once every 4 or 5 years.
We let people buy their (factory) ammo wherever and, if desired, keep their own brass, so there is no "for profit" motive with the policy at our place. Freedom Plan members on their own time are welcome to shoot reloads - at their own risk- to their hearts' content. But ... What a lot of people don't know is, that if one reads the fine print, even NRA-endorsed insurance policies can and do have an exclusion of coverage if the "accident victim" is shooting reloaded ammunition. Ya think they might have just a little bit experience with such?
Reagarding the laser-use question, I've heard it both ways out of DPS over the years, depending upon who you talk to. I pretty well stick with the original "no" answer when a student asks, but tell 'em if they can't pass it the first time with iron sights, I'll call whoever I can reach at DPS to hear "the answer for the day" before they come back on another day and try again. ' Have not had anyone wanting to shoot with a laser take me up on that - or flunk it the first time either.

Why is it necessary to call DPS on this issue? Do not they have written standards for the course to which instructors can refer?Greybeard wrote:
