Quick IDPA question (CDP related)
In a typical match, how many mags do you guys carry? I'm assuming 3. The extra one is to top off.

Charles, 2 extra? So one in the gun and two on the hip? Or a total of 2 period? What about the +1 issues?Charles L. Cotton wrote:IDPA rules allow only two extra mags on your belt. In IDPA you are allowed two mags in suitable carriers on your belt. You can load a round from a top off mag, and you load another in the gun, so you start with three mags plus one round.
This applies no matter what class you are shooting except BUG. You can carry extra mags in your pockets, but you are not supposed to use them for reloads.

I shoot IDPA with an eight round mag in my gun and two on my belt. In my back pocket I keep a seven round mag with five or six rounds in it, that I use to "top off" my gun to its capacity of nine rounds at the start of a stage. One in the chamber, eight in the mag.slow944 wrote:I'm thinking about joining the group in Dallas and saw this post and was wondering what a "top off mag" is?
If I were not able to finish a stage with the mags on my belt I would not be allowed, under IDPA rules, to use a mag out of my pocket to finish, thus that extra mag in my pocket has no official function other than to ease loading.
When I first started shooting IDPA I only owned three mags, and charging the gun before a stage consisted of:
1 Inserting a mag and
2 Chambering a round and
3 Ejecting the mag and
4 Holstering the gun and
5 Retrieving a single round from pocket and
6 Inserting that round into the reserved mag and
7 Unholstering the gun and
8 Inserting the now fully charged mag back into the gun.
Now I start with two mags in my hand, charge the gun with the "top off" mag, eject it and insert the other mag and I am ready.

Since we are on the topic of IDPA, do you have to classify with each gun you want to shoot? I'm scheduled to shoot a classifier in April. I plan on shooting my 1911. For example I make CDP Marksman. Let's just say the following week there is a sanctioned match and I want to shoot a Glock that's ESP legal. Will I still be classified at Marksman or will I have to shoot another classifier with it?
